Don Harold New School Board Elections Ordered In Lumberton It's official. The U.S. District Court in Fsyettevillehas ordered new elections for three members of the Lumberton School Board in reponse to a ruling last fall that found Lumberton in violation of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. ;The ruling was signed by U.S. District Judge W. Earl Britt, who helped defend Lumberton ^ before being named to the federal bench by then President Jimmy Carter. Britt ordered the elections to be held on the as yet unannounced date for statewide primary elections. The ruling stems from the illegal annexations in the late 60's and 70's of the Barker Ten Mile, Lakrwood Estates..f. )( and Clyborn Pines-Country Cub sections ? >, # by the Lumberton City Schools. Local parents filed suit, through the auspices of Lumbee River Legal Services and the American Civil Liberties Union, contesting the annexations. Under the most recent ruling, only residents of the Lumberton School , District, excluding the illegal annexa tions, can participate as a voter or ? candidate. The seats held now by Albert Kahn, Sarah Peck and E.A. Sundy are effected by the ruling. Since Ms. Peck lives in the illegally annexed area, she will not be allowed to participate.
