Nov. 9. | That event, to which the ! tickets are SSO-a-plate. begins at 6 p.m. with Miss McCor kle's singing performance fol lowing at 8 p.m. The $50 ticket covers admission to both the dinner and the performance. Speaker at the dinner will be dynamic Jim Valvano. head basketball coach of N.C. Stale University. The word is that he also wows any audien ce. Miss McCorkle will be something special to see as she puts on a show about the "Hollywood Blondes." She will vocally take the audience back to the days of Mae West, Jean Harlow, Bfllle Holiday, Marilyn Monroe, Etc. Of her. Rex Reed of the New York Daily News says: "Susannah McCorkle is not just a good vocalist, she's a great new singer." In 1982. Jazz Journal Inter national's Reader's Poll rank ed third in the Female Vocalist category-right be hind Sarah Vanghan and Ella Fltxgermld. An american singer who began her career in Europe, she is now recording, per forming and making a name for herself in this country. An accomplished writer, her non-fiction has appeared in "New York" Magazine. Her fiction has been publish ed in "Mademoiselle" and "The O. Henry Book of Prize -a rife ? Short Stories." and in major magazines in England. Aus tralia. Sweden. Denmark. Norway, and Holland. PSU ALREADY $45,497 TOWARD S 100,000 GOAL On this Thursday, the An nual Giving Campaign com mittee of 30 held its next-to last meeting before the big fund-raising dinner-and members were busy turning in the checks of people to whom they had sold tickets. But even before that meeting, it was reported the $48,497 had already been received toward PSU's $100,000 cam paign goal, this academic year. Therefore, at this early date PSU is already nearly half of the way toward its goal. Excellent! HORACE LOCKLEAR ONCE PLAYED BASKETBALL FOR VALVANO'S TEAM Rep. Horace Laddear, a PSU graduate, says he once played "fun" basketball on a House of Representatives team coached by Jim Valvano, the Wolfpack mentor who will be the PSU speaker on Nov. 7. He and Barbara will be at the dinner as he renews acquain tances with his old coach. CHANCELLOR G1VENS FEATURED IN ASSOCIATED PRESS STORY The Associated Press ran a lengthy story about the week-long program which Chancellor Paul Glvens and other college chancellors and presidents recently attended in Greensboro. It was at the Center for Creative Leader ship. All kinds of concepts to ?a pinpoint leadership were uti lized at the seminar. Chancellor Givens' name led off the AP story. Two psychologists Were watching him and others through a one-day looking glass, noting the competition, the interrup tions. the persuasiveness and the taking-charge in the group of five of which Dr. Givens was a part. "Paul's really hard- balling it now," noted Dwight Clark. UNC psychologist, in the story, adding: "They're lock ed in a relatively high level of competition. THe AP story observed that Dr. Givens "comes from a background of committees.". It later added that "Givens says he learned he has to delegate more authority." LALON JONES TO BE CHANCELLOR'S RADIO GUEST Lalon Jones. PSU assis tant basketball coach and last year's Carolinas Conference "Softball Coach of the Year," will be the guest of Chancellor Givens on his weekly radio program. "From The Chan cellor's Office," to be broad cast at 10:45 a.m. Sunday over WAGR in Lumberton. CHORAL FESTIVAL SET FRIDAY ft SATURDAY The third annual South eastern Choral Festival will be held at PSU Friday and Saturday with Dr. John Hab erlen of Georgia State Univer sity as clinician. The students taking part will present a concert at the Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. On Saturday Dr. Haberlen will be working with area teachers. He will be assisted by Dr. Lyn Mlcbetettl and Dr. Harold Slagle of the PSU Musk Department. 4 - MUSIC DEPARTMENT TO | HOST ROBESON COUNTY I SCHOOLS STUDENTS * On Tuesday. Nov 2. the tPSU Music Department *UI host Robeson County Schools students at 9:30 a.m., and ? again at 1 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The grades will be the 2nd. 3rd, I and fourth. PSU AGAIN TAKING PART IN LIVING HISTORY ? PROJECT Fo/ the third year PSU is taking PM' in the "Living History* project with Robe son County schools in which PSU students portray histori cal characters. Benjanrin Fran Id In and Barrett Tubman are characters to be portrayed this year. The PSU students were at Fairgrove Tuesday and will be at R.B. Dean Thursday-and at Proctorville Nov. 4. Long Branch Nov. 9. and Union Chapel Nov. 16. Dr. Chat Jordan, theatre director of PSU. is working with the Robeson County schools on this project that has been so well received hi the past. FAIRMONT ARTIST ANB TEACHER PUTS ON EXHIBIT AT PSU NBa Chamberlain, artist and teacher from Fairmont, will have an art exhiBft opening Sunday in the PSU Performing Arts Center. The show will include 20 works in watercolor. acrylic, pencil, ink and oil. Subjects range from landscapes to abstracts and include several figure studies. Mrs. Chamberlain, who is a member of PSU's Annual Giving Campaign committee, maintains a private studio near Fairmont and teaches art classes for Fairmont City Schools. The exhibit will continue through Nov. 12 at PSU. DUNDARRACH CHURCH PROVIDES LUNCH FOR PSU STUDENTS Lunch on Wednesday at PSU's Baptist Student Union was provided by Dundarrach Baptist Church, for which Dr. Dalton Brooks (PSU director of institutional research) ser ves as pastor. The eight persons pre par ign the lunch were Maxana Oxendine, Lottie B. Jones, Patricia A. Locklear, Pat aMWk Maynor, Mary Margaret Loddear-and the men cook ing the fried chicken outside in a pot were William Branch, Richiud Oxendine, and Billy Jacobs. The students enjoyed a delicious lunch- and were ministered to at the same time. ? SUSANNAH McCORKLE... The two are Jean Dameroo of Lanr lnburg and Mike Stevens of Hamlet. County Recreation Football The running of Gary Quick sparked Rowland to a 41-0 victory over Pembroke in the Robeson County Recreation and Park Commtssion 6th and 7th grade football league. Gary Quick scored 3 touch downs for Rowland, the first one coming from a 55 yard run. Pembroke couldn't get their offense started for fine defense play of Greg Lewis and Greg Blue. Rowland defense were do ing their job and offense went to work. Gary Quick sconed.on a run of 23 yards and 45 yards. Also scoring for Row land were Michael McCallum on a 45 yd. run and Andre Reeves on a 98 yard pass from is 'CurtisMcCrae. Greg Blue kicked 3 PAT's and Gary Quick made 1 PAT, making the final score Rowland 41 i Pembroke-0. Social if Services I plans Gospel Sing The Robeson County De partment of Social Services is sponsoring a Gospel Sing on Nov. bat 7 p.m. The singing will be held at Union Chapel Community Church. Route 1. Pembroke. The purpose of the gospel sing is to raise money for the approximately 170 children in foster care. There will not be a charge; but an offering will be taken during the singing. The money raised will be used to enable the children in foster care to have a most meaningful Christmas. The featured singers will be the Union Chapel Gospel Youth, the Low cry Family, the Hestertown Youth Choir, Ms. Van Strickland, the Cherokee Quartet, the Row land Youth Choir, the Mt. Airy Brotherhood, the Mt. Airy Quartet, the Lowery Trio, the Oxendine Family, the Felix Deal Family. Ms. Dorothy Mitchell. Buddy Scott, the West Bros., the Melody Four, the Galileans, the Locklear Sisters, the Mt. Olive Choir, the Spirituals. Gina. John and Shelia, the Jones CHapel Baptist Church Young Adult Choir.
