Bass of Reynolds n4 Henry Brown of Anheuser-Busch. , "The Samuel E. CornirJ Publisher of the Year Award" presented annually by Gulf Oil Corporation, went to Garth C. -Reeves, Sr., editor publisher of thuMiami Times and immediate past-president of the NNPA. Award included a $1,000 cash prize. "The John B. Russwurm Trophy" representing NNPA's top Merit Award achievement was claimed this year by both the Milwaukee Courier,. Jerrel W. Jones, editor-publisher, and the Sacra:oento Observer, William H. Lee, editor-publisher. Each received a trophy and an equal share of the $1,000 prize. 29 PAPERS GET AWARDS Altogether, , 29 NNPA member newspapers and their staffers received 89 plaques and $20,000 in cash awards. The 29 papers are: Atlanta Inquirer, Carolinian (Raleigh) and Charleston (SC) Chronicle, Cleveland Call & Post, Dailey News of the Virgin Islands,'Jet Magazine, Kansas City Call, Los Angeles Sentinel, Louisville Defender, Medium (Seattle), Michigan , Chronicle, Milwaukee Courier and Milwaukee Star. Mobile Beacon, New Pitts burgh Courier, Norfolk Journal & Guide, Observe! (Chicago), Omaha Star, Phila delphia 1 Tribune, Racine Courier, Richmond Afro American, Sacramento Obser ver, San Francisco Sun Re porter, St. Louis American, St. Louis Argus, Savanna? i Tribune, Tri-State Defen der (Memphis), Washington Afro-American, and Wilming ton (NC) Journal. AWARD SPONSORS The prize money was provided by Alcoa, American Tobaccr Co., Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co:, Carnation Co., Coca-Cola, A&P Stores, Gulf Oil Corp., Heinz U. S. A., J. C. Penney Co., Lever Brothers, Miller Brewing Co., Mutu.il Black Network, Pep!u-(la Co., Philip Morris, PPG Industries. Schlitz Brewing Co., Sears, Roebuck, Sterling Drug, U. S. Steel and Westinghouse. Special courtesies were extended the convention by Sears which hosted a recep tion at its Community Ser ' vice Center building which it has turned over to the St. Louis Urban League, by Anheuser-Busch which spon sored a luncheon, by Hiram Walker with a reception, by Monsanto, Ralston Purina, ; the Globe Democrat, South western Bell, and St. Louis Argus with a dinner, ICBO and Warner Bros, with a , luncheon, Don King with a reception, and Gulf Oil with a dinner. Dr. Eugene Mitchell, publisher of the St. Louis Argus, N. A. Sweets, pub lisher of the St. Louis Amer? can, and Mrs. Howard B. Woods, publisher of the St. Louis Sentinel, were hosts to the convention which was held at the Breckenridge Pavi lion Hotel.
