The North Carolina Department of Transportation, Division of
Highways, hat approved the corridor location and the Federal
Highway Administration has concurred in the corridor location for
the proposed construction of Interstate 40 route in Orange and
Durham Counties.
The final Environmental Impact Statement for this project has also
been approved by the Federal Highway Administration.
This action is the outgrowth of the Corridor Public Hearing held on
June 29. WK In the R&ert-Herr Junjor High School located on Cor
nwainrt&lsrSeve at the
public hearing.. The approved corridor location is identified as
"Alternate 1-B Revised" and is described below. The revision to Cor
ridor I-B consists of relocation of the proposed interchange with 1-85, '
Southwest of Hillsborough, to use the interchange shown on Alternate
I -C at the public hearing.
The approved corridor begins at I-S5 between SR 1 134 and SR 1006
Southwest of Hillsborough. The corridor then proceeds in a
southeasterly direction, crossing SR 1006, SR 1 133 and SR 1009, turn
ing southerly at the Duke Power Company Transmission Line. The
corridor then crosses SR 1723 and parallels NC 86 on the west and
runs west of Blackwood Station. The corridor crosses NC 86 and turns
eastward in the vicinity of the present intersection of NC 86 with
southeasterly, crossing US 15-501 near the Oranage-Durham County
Line, northeast of Chapel Hill. The corridor then continues
southeasterly, northeast of Chapel Hill. The corridor then continues
southeasterly, passing just west of the Leigh Farm (National Historic
Site) and crosses existing NC 54 just east of SR 1110 (Farrington
Road). The corridor then turns easterly and continues crossing NC
751, Southern Railway. SR 1111 (Fayetteville Road) and existing NC
54 in the vicinity of Duke Power Company Transmission Lines, then
continuing along, north of, and generally parallel to existing NC 54 at
the existing treminus of 1-40 and the North-South Freeway in the
Research Triangle Park. '
Maps and prints of aerial photography showing the approved cor
ridor location-are contained in the approved Final Environmental Im
pact Statement. Copies of the Final Environmental Impact Statement
are available for public review and copying at the Division office of
the Jferth Carolina Department of Transportation on Duke Street in
Durtwrn and the Chapel Hill Municipal Building, 306 North Colum
bia Street, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Copies of the Final En
vironmental Impact Statement may be obtained from the Planning
and Research Branch, Highway Building, N. Wilmington Street in
Raleigh. Large maps and aerial photography prints of the proposed
project may be reviewed in the Highway Design Branch at the
Highway Building in Raleigh. . , '
The delineation of the proposed right of way taking, together with
the design scheme for interchanges and side road crossings will be

The Sixth Annual "Sunday .On tThe Square" was
celebrated Sunday past from 1-6 p.m. Many attended,
participated, shopped, ate and enjoyed the outing.
Many attended the 47th Annual Chadburn
Strawberry Festival during the weekend. They enjoyed
strwawberry auctions, a parade, crowned a Strawberry
Queen, and attended a Queen's Ball.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday past
at Brookside Cemetary by the Revs. Albert Heath and
Jonh W. Hatch for Dr. Frank p. Williston, 80, of 529
E. Russel St. Dr. Williston was a retired drugstore
owner and operator. Sympathy is extended to his two
daughters , Mrs. Mae Williston Terry of Los Angeles,
Calif., and Mrs. Isabell Cassells of Lancaster, Calif.;
two sons, Fred Williston of Charlotte and ASamuel
Williston of Providence , R.l. ,a sister, Mrs.Anice Hug
gins of this City.
