SAT., OCTOBER 25,1980 Achiovononl Durlian Has 9 Senifinalists i EVANSTON, ILL. Nine high school students of Durham are listed among the 1,500 Semifinalists in the seven teenth annual (1981) Na tional Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students. More than 70,000 black students enrolled in about 7,000 U.S. secondary schools entered the scholarship competition as high school juniors. Semifinalists represent the highest scorers among black students who took the PSATNMSQT in 1979 and requested considera tion in -the Achievement Program. They were selected on a regional allocation basis, in numbers that are propor tional to the Negro population of the states assigned to each region. "The Achievement Pro gram's ongoing efforts are focused upon identifying and honoring motivated and able black youth from all parts of the nation. The most outstanding of the Semifinalists named will compete for about $2 million in college undergraduate scholar ships to be awarded next spring," said L.C. McMillan, who manages the Achievement Pro gram. The Durham nine are: Hillside High School Lester B. Bass, Miss Kimberly J. Battle (who is also a National Merit 1 Semifinalist), Lawrence H. Thompson, and Kevin Washington; Durham Academy Nathan T. Garrett, Miss Valerie F. Kennedy, and Mark A. Sanders; Northern High School: Miss Valarie D. Brew ington and Edward E. Lee. To be considered for one of about 600 Achieve ment Scholarships to be offered in 1981, these studenttinttl!ttiev a a quirements and advance to Finalist standing in the competition. The awards for which Finalists will compete are financed by grants from over 17S Achievement Program sponsors (businesses, cor porations, company foun dations, and colleges and universstks), and by con tributions from a sizable group of donors. Every FmaUst will be considered for one of ap-I proximately 325 National Achievement $1000 Scholarships, allocated by geographic region to en sure that winners will be representative of outstan ding black students na tionwide. Winners of "National" awards will be chosen by a Selection Committee of educators who will meet, for this specific purpose; reci pients will be Finalists judged by the committee to have the best combina tion of personal attributes and abilities that are con sidered to be important in college work. In addition, about 275 renewable Achievement Scholarships worth bet ween $1,000 and $8,000 (or more) over the four years of' college undergraduate study will be offered. Those Achievement Scholarships are awarded to Finalists who meet preferential criteria specified by the organizations providing support. About 135 cor porate sponsors and some forty colleges and univer sities are expected to underwrite four-year scholarships for black students in 1981. Winners of both Na tional Achievement $1000 Scholarships and corporate-sponsored four year Achievement Scholarships will be an nounced publicly on March 19, 1981. Reci pients of college sponsored four-year Achievement Scholarships will be announced in dividually between mid May and mid-June in 1981. In sixteen annual Achievement 'Programs completed between 1965 and 1980, iome 6,900 black students have receive td awards that have a total value , 91 bduui million.
