The new records policy will permit parents and students to examine the records during the pupil's sixth, eighth, and twelfth year in school. ' Dr. Hammonds said that notices would be published in the local newspaper each year at the beginning of school, and that notes would be sent home to parents concern ing the availability of records to be examined. Hammonds also said that if the pupils' records are in more than one place,- the principal(s) will make the records accessible, and if necessary, will try to ad just a time to review the records that is convenient to both the parents and students. The School Board was also given a review of the Police Safety Liaison Pro gram by officer Talmadge W. Lassiter and several other policemen from the Durham Police Depart ment. The Police Safety Liaison Program which was rejected by the Durham City School Board a few years ago, was recently reintroduced by Ms. Beth Upchurch, a member of the Board. Mrs. Upchurch said, in ex- pressing an interest in the police program, that she had always been taught that policemen protected her and that they were her friends. The police officers, speaking at Monday night's meeting, said that, they were part of the' Liaison program in the Durham County Schools, and they sought to con vince the other Board members that they had been successful in dispell ing the "TV cops and rob ibers image" among the I pupils at the county school where the program exists.' Dr. Bobby Colli ns,vice ' principal, said that the program had brought, about a closer relationship between police officers, and the students in both I counseling and advisory I positions. Dr. Lawrence question ed the validity of having policemen rather than trained psychologists counsel students, and' Mrs. Clement questioned ,the policemen's training for professional counsel ing. Dr. Hammonds also ex pressed his concern for a clause in the police liaison proposal that states "command and control of disciplinary problems rest solely with the liaison of-' ficer and his com-; manSer." Officer Lassiter said that this clause refer red only to serious felonies and that minor disciplinary .problems came under the jurisdic tion of the principal at the school where the program exists. V Dr. Hammond received permission from the School Board to make a recommendation on the Police Safety Liaison Pro gram at the next regular School Board meeting. A Career Awareness.
