Mrs. lIolmaH Named AccoMUaf Manager
Mrs. Vivian Parrish Holman of Cedarbrook Cres
cent, Utica, has been appointed the new accounting
manager in the business offices of the Observer
Dispatch and Daily Press.
A native of Durham and graduate of Little River
High School, Mrs. Holman earned her B.S. degree in
accounting at North Carolina Central University. She
has lived in the Utica area for five years and was
previously employed at Griffiss Air Force Base, NY.
Her husband, Fred Holman, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Selma Holman of Durham, is a soil conservationist and
head of the Department of Agriculture's district office
in New Hartford. The Holmans who moved to Utica
from Middletown, NY, have one child, Alisha, 9. ;
Mrs. Holman is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
McKiever Parrish of Rougemont.
Mr. and Mrs. Alphonzo Claiborne, Richmond Va.,
spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
George Fuller in Durham.
Congratulations and best wishes to newlyweds Mr,
and Mrs. Wilbert Burnette, Mr. and Mrs. William

anniversary observance of the Thrifty Service Club held
Sunday, February 15, at Mount Zion. He urged the club i
members to continue to help when and where they
could, using the topic "Grow Not Weary In Well Do
ing". . - ,
Mrs. Milie Williams was chairman. Music was
presented by the Mount Zion Male Chorus. A special:
presentation was made by Mrs. Beatrice Holman to the :
president, Mrs. Aline Davis. Mrs. Mozell Flintall read
the club history.
Guest club was the Flower Club of Mount Zion.

High entrant is Miss Sherron Elain Hayes while Miss
Pamela Fay Qverby is a student at Northern High.
Jabberwock participants from . Orange High are

Senior High.
Contestants from Southern High are Misses Lynette

Through the end of February, contestants vying for
the awards will be actively seeking the support of
families, friends and merchants.
Again the yearly event promises an evening of unique
entertainment. This year, the Jabberwock theme will'
highlight Durham Alumnae Chapter's half century of
service, chairman Miss Phyllis Lee has stated. I

Happenings

Environmental improvement is . at the top of the
Youth Council's list of priorities. Enthusiastic members
devote their weekends to the collecting of aluminum
cans. It is that time.
Its time to begin gardening chores, too.
Its been an entertaining month for us on TV with the
"specials". We have thoroughly enjoyed them. To
name a few, "I Remember Harlem", "Ossie Davis &
Ruby Dee". "Oscar Brown Series", "Roots", "To Be
Young Gifted And Black" and "Reflections".
The Parent-Teacher-Student Association held its
third meeting at Pine Forest Senior High last Friday
evening. The program featured science fair displays and
winning projects.
' .
Parents for the Advancement of Gifted Education
will hold a meeting on February 19 in Belk's Communi
ty Room. Membership information is available.
National VFW Mrs. Jeanette Frank, the national :
president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, visited in our city during the week at
which time the auxiliary's Midyear Conference and
Council of Administration meeting was in session at the
Bordeaux Motor Inn and Convention Center.

Ms. Sarah Emanuel of Sumter, S.C., and Melvin
Shafer of Fayetteville were married Saturday afternoon
in Air Force Base Chapel.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James
Emanuel of Fayetteville and parents of the bridegroom
are Mr. and Mrs. Norman Shafer of Falls City,
Nebraska.
The bride's mother was hostess for a reception in the
Main NCO Club ballroom.
The bride is assistant manager of Baskin-Robbins in
Sumter. The bridegroom Is in the 27th Engineer Bat
talion at Fort Bragg. .
"Close Encounters of the Foreign Kind" was the
theme for the International Festival which was held on
Saturday afternoon at E.E. Smith High School. ;
Students, parents, friends and many natives par-;
ticipated in the festival. -; ' '
Many enjoyed a "Valentine Celebration" at Emily's ;
Saturday with a buffet.

The Kinneys enjoyed Herbert Hodges, Jr., of War- '
saw on Sunday.
Mrs. Eleanor McAlister Lewis, formerly of Fayet
teville, died in Washington, D.C. Funeral services were
held at Stephen Rodgers Funeral Home here on Sunday
afternoon. Rev. Harry Miller officiated. Sympathy is
extended to her sister, Mrs. Adelaid Bristow.

Alamance Road, were held Sunday afternoon at the
