Dance Showcase win come to Charlotte May 28-29 as part of Jie celebration of Dance Week n North Carolina, proclaimed jy Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr., or May 25- 31. Sponsored by the N. C. Arts Council and Dance Charlotte, Inc., the Showcase brings the state's five main dance com panies together on one stage. The Showcase to be held in Dana Auditorium at Queens College, will open Thursday, May 28 at 4 p.m. with the Choreographers Showcase. The 8:15 p jn. evening perfor mances will be presented by the N. In proclaiming Dance Week, Governor Hunt spoke of dance as "an important art form, incorporating and sup plementing elements drawn from musk, theatre and the visual arts." He referred to the state's national recognition as die "home to the N. C. School of the Arts, the American Dance Festival and other important institutions as well as being an important center of the dance world." The Showcase is more than performance. Friday will be a day of classes conducted by teachers for;, dancers on all levels. Tickets, will be $5 for adults and $4 for students under 18. Tickets are available at the Spirit Square Box Office in Charlotte. The Showcase is supported in part by funds from the Na tional Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the N. C. Arts Council. For details call (704) 274-1619 in Charlotte or (919) 733-7897 in Raleigh Performing Thursday, May 28 will be: ' Frank Holder Dance Co., established in 1973 in Greensboro, has rapidly taken its place as one of the premiere dance ensembles in the southeast. During its current season the company has per formed in 37 North Carolina counties, 15 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. One of only 31 dance troupes nationwide to be selected to participate in the National En dowment for the Arts' Artists-in-Schools program, the com pany this year performed more in-school residences than any other dance company in the nation except one. North Carolina Dance Theatre, otginally created as a professional affiliate of the N: C. School of the Arts, is in its Uth season as a professional - dance company. Dance Theatre performs throughout the United States presenting a varied repertoire of classical and contemporary works. It is among a very select group of companies with rights to works ranging from those by George Balanchine to Alvin Ailey. N. C. Dance Theatre has performed from Alaska to Florida and at such prestigious events as Jacob's pillow Dance Festival in Becket, Mass., . Spoleto USA in Charleston, S. C, Wolf Trap Farm for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Va., and the American Dance Festival in Durham. The com pany travels in its own bus and truck ' complete with lighting and sound equipment, dance floor and costumes, enabling it to present the same show in , a small town or large city, It performs -often in North Carolina schools. New Reflections Dance Theatre has in its repertoire works choreographed by com pany members as well as out side professionals. In addition to its regular concert series, it also has a rigorous performing schedule -; throughout the Charlotte community. -New Reflections also offers dance instruction to all age groups. The company has recently merged with the Charlotte Regional Ballet and the Greater Dance Guild to form Dance Charlotte, Inc. New Performing Dance Company was started in 1975 to provide a performing outlet for the many choreographers and dancers , in the triangle area of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. In recent seasons the company has collaborated with local composers -and musicians, has performed for educational and cable televi sion and is in the process of helping renovate the Durham Arts Council Theatre as its permanent base. NPDC School, founded in 1977, pro vides instruction to children and adults on all levels. The Easy Moving Com pany, with flexible troups of three to six dancers, brings its art to a variety of audiences around the state through live as well as televised perfor mances. Many of its perfor mances have been given for children during tours for the N. C. Department of Public Instruction and participation in the N. C. Arts Council's Artists-in-Schools program. The company has also brought performances and workshops . to audiences of people with various physical handicaps.
