Carolina Central Universi ty was honored recently by, the International Associa- tion of University Presidential the associa tion's triennial convention in Costa Rica. V ' Dr. Whiting received the association's Medal of Merit for contributions to the association and to the cause of world peace. The NCCU Chancellor was re-elected treasurer of the association. He also serves on its executive board. Whiting has held a vice-presidency of the association. Whiting was one of five North Carolina educators among the 700 college and university heads attending the conference, held from June 25 through July 3. The other North Caroli nians were President James V Scales f' of Wake Forest ' University, Chancellor E.K.Fretwell of the University Of North Carolina " at Charlotte, Chancellor Charles Lyons of , Fayetteville State University, and President Prezell Robinson of St. Augustine's College, Raleigh. V'- Costa Rica has donated a site for a University of Peace, to be operated by the United Nations or another international agency. The Central American nation is the on ly nation in the Western Hemisphere without a standing army, and takes pride in a long history of democracy and pacifism. The University of Peace was the subject of extend ed discussions among the presidents of universities from ? sixty nations.' , Chancellor Whiting said the speakers and associa tion members found general agreement among themselves as 1 to the desirability of an educa tional 'institution dedicated to peace. - "About the only agree-, t ment on the curriculum is 'that it must be inter disciplinary," Chancellor Whiting reported. "There was also agreement ' that the university initially should be for graduate students only."
