CHIl.DR^:^ — Children are continuously coJ

should take a look at his/her personal situai
Could he/she best serve a child for emergency
a few weeks, months, or long-term care, wl
could mean years of caring for a child?
The Durham County Department of Social
vices needs foster parents for school age child
children with emotional problems, physical
mental handicaps adolescents, and sibling groi
“special needs” children. The basic requirement
become foster parents are not that difficult,
must:
— be 21 to 65 years old;
— provide a healthy living environment andn
standards for sanitation and fire safety;
— have adequate sleeping space; and
— have a stable income.
The crucial and most important criterion
becoming a foster parent is to be able to be comi
ted to helping children. Most of these children
come into care with emotional problems relalei
physical, emotional or sexual abuse, neglect,ab
donment or death of their parents or
caretakers. The loss of family and friends,
familiar places xan be extremely traumatic fo
child. He may manifest his feelings of loss inm
challenging ways. It might be necessary for
foster parent to be an active participant and
vocate for the child in school or participate in fa
ly counseling. For children with special med
needs, it might require special training. Thene
of these children are many.
Monthly informational meetings on foster
are held at the Department of Social Services,
dates and times, please call the Homefinding 1
at 683-3500. If you believe that you can prov
care for any of the “special needs children’’
will be immediate follow-up as this is the area
greatest need.
