The Gap Band also fills the top chart slots with songs like "Burn Rubber" (a No. 1 R&B single as well as a pop hit), and "Yearnin"' (Top 10 R&B and Top 40 pop) from The Gap Band III, now a platinum album filling the spaces on their already crowded walls. After all, The Gap Band II scored gold for this cap tivating musical unit, which has been filling a lot of gaps in the charts since scoring No. 1 R&B single, "Shake", on thei? : first MercuryPolyGram album, The Gap Band. Hit songs like "Open Up Your Mind (Wide)," "Steppin'," "Oops (Upside Your Head)" and" Party Lights" have plug ged The Gap Band into America's ears, and earned it's members admiration from the likes of Stevie Wonder, who asked them to contribute their talents to his Hotter Than July album. The, group's three Wilson Brothers, (Ronnie, Charles and Robert) grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the sons :of a minister. Tljcir first musical exposure came as members of the church choir. The group Ronnie later found ed was named The Gap Band from an acronym for the three main arteries at the heart of Tulsa's black-business com munity Greenwood, Archer and Pine Streets, and from the beginning, due to their ver satility, The Gap Band has been able to successfully mix R&B with firm pop appeal.
