There are over sixty thousand per sons on the pay-rll of Kewr York State, to whom there is annually paid about $5,000,000. According to recent English experi ments, it is found that a growth of ivy over a house renders the interior entire ly free from moisture. Mr. George W. Childs has given to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania a copy of the death-mask of Lincoln, the original being in the National Museum, Washington. Gen. Farnsworth, who was in the same boat with Grover Cleveland in the duck-hunt on Maryland waters, says that the President handles a breech loader very neatly, and that he brought down seven redheads at one shot John C. Calhoun is on record as hav ing once tried to write a poem. A pret ty girl asked him to do it, and he re luctantly gave his consent, beginning the effort with the immortal word "whereas." He never got any further. There are American hams, writes Mr. Sala, which when boiled in champagne are palatable; but, as a rule, both ham and bacon in America, as in Australia, are very nasty hard, intolerably salt, a great deal too lean, and clumsily smoked. The word salary comes from the Latin solarium, literally salt money, from sal. salt, which was a part of the pay of Roman soldiers. So the young men who say jocularly, when they draw their pay, that they are taking their "sugar" are wrong; they are getting their 'salt" The longevity of women who are for tunate enough to marry soldiers is shown in the fact that our pension rolls bear the names of about 20,000 widows of the veterans of 1812. The brides of seventy-four years ao are nearly cen tenarians now, and the'uuniber of them quite surpasses belief. The many individuals who persist it reading by lamp or candle light while they lie in bed and thereby necessitate several times a vear the calling out of the fire department may possibly in the future indulge their literary habit with perfect safety. An Italian claims to have invented a luminous printing ink which will make it possible to read newspapers in the dark. Layers of stone containing some of the supposed htiman footprints lately found near- Lake Managva, in Nicara gua, have been sent to the Vienna Na tural History Museum. The stone is a volcanic tula, and the impressions are extremely sharp and distinct, and, if genuine footprints, prove the existence of man in Central America at a very remote period. There is a new pest for western farm ers to fight in the shape of a yellow worm which developes into a black fly about the eighth of an inch in length. It is verv thrifty in some parts of the Willamette Valley, Oregon, sect is known to entomologists mi ine m as the "wheat isosoma." It has appeared in Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri. Thew is only one breed a year. The new oil-fields of Wyoming, in the Bingham Basin, are directly south of Billings. Mont., near the boundary be tween Montana and Wyoming. The oil is said to contain 40 per cent of mineral sperm oil, 27 per cent of kero sene, with, small percentage of gasoline, benzine, and naphtha. Its illuminating power is of a high order; and it is so pure that ranchmen in the vicinity burned it, lst wijiter in their lamps The codfish continues to grow inde finitely, without regard to age, so long as it has a plentiful supply of food. The oldest codfish are the largest, and they sometimes grow to be as long as a man is high. They swim about near the bottom of the sea,, not often ascend ing to the surface, feeding on all sorts of animal life, such as crabs, shellfish, and other small fish, but not on tables. vege- A oitizen of Millview, Va., killed a six-foot moccasin snake last woek that had a wire collar around its neck, to which was attached a button with these words: "Don't tread on me!" As this was the motto o the famous Revolution ary "Culpepper Minute Men," and aj the button was probably from one of their uniforms, the question arises a3 to the probable age of this peculiar ser pent. Three dudish young men of Meriden. Conn., decided to call upon three young women who were not at all anxious to see them. They did call, rigged out in their best clothes, were ushered into the parlor, and there found, conspicuously displayed, a quart of salt and a spoon. After gazing at these for some time and waiting in vain for the young women, the callers came to the conclusion that thpv were, indeed, too fresh, and went home. The fflaciers of the North Pacific coast are small but magnificent. The Muir is three miles long, with a perpen dicular face of 400 feet, stretching: like a frozen waterfall or gigantic dam en tirely across the head of the glacier bay. Its breast is as blue as turquoise. At a distance it looks like a fillet rent from the azure skv and laid across the brow of the cliff. "When the full blaze of the southwestern sun lights up its opales eence it jrleams like the crates of the o - celestial city. M. de Lesseps is splendidly lodged in a new house in the Avenue Montaigne, whieh was purchased by the money made bv Mme. de lesseps on ner ongi nal Suez investments. Her dowry of 100.000 francs was employed in buying shares when they were below par that is to say, at the time her marriage was asreed to. That sum last year was swollen to 1,500000 francs, and a great deal of interest produced in the mean while was invested in other profitable ventures. The hall in the Lesseps man Kion is one of the largest in any very modern private house in Paris. The native Bermudians are an easy going, good-natured people, very fond of amusements, in illustration of which a letter in the Troy Times records this incident: "A lady from New York was in one of the largest stores here one morning looking at goods, when the clerks began to put up the shutters She nelrprl what was the matter, supposing: the proprietor had died or failed, but was informed that the yachts were just . m 11 m t V going out, ana tnai an rne Dusinesa places always closed whenever there was yacht-race or anything especial go- in r on." The manufacture of lager in America only dates back about forty years, but it has erone ahead and spread itself like the mustard seed in the parable. There are now about 2,200 breweries in this conntrv. and thev sold last year over 19.000.000 barrels of malt liquorsr O: this.-New Yoric and- Brooklyn contri buted near a quarter. The next largest producers ajre MiwauKee, ou- iois, Cincinnati, Chicago, Boston! and New ark, in the Cider named. , An estimate of - the capital invested in the trade would probably reach $150,000,000. Ninety-live per cent of the brewers are Germans.1 - : 1 "; I . Representatives Smalls and OTIara, he two colored members of I the lower house of congress, are thus described bv the Washington correspondent of a southern paper: "The Intelligence of Smalls is that of an African! hunroved by contact with higher civilization, while that of O'Hara U rather the intelli gence of the Caucasian with 'an infusion of barbaric blood m his veins. Small ooks, moves, acts, and talks like a ne gro preacher and revivalist. Ho has a dark skin and iron-gray hair. O'Hara is much lighter in color and more ele- in bearing. His skin is of the shade of ! well-tanned and seasoned leather. His mustache and whiskers are kept carefully trimmed, i He smokes cigarettes, i He is tall, and carries him self well; and the bald spot on the top of his head is cut after an aristocratic pattern. O'Hara has a positive taste and some talent for legislation. Smalls manifests I his strength wholly in his Mosaic character as a "leader of his people. i The Smart Boyi j There were two bright little cirls off for a holiday with their Western uncle, a big, good-natured man With a diamond breast-pin, and his voluble son. a lad about the age of his little cousins, whom he constantly pestered by his rude and dominating behavior. The boy was a product which it is the despair of all Europe to produce, and our travellers had ffreat delight in him as an epitome of American "smartness." He led all the conversation, had confident opinions about everything, easiiy put down his deferential papa, and pleased the other passengers py his .self-sullieient know-it-all air. Toi a bov who had travelled in California and seen the Alps it was not to be expected that this humble moun tain cou. When the slae reacti ed the Kid V an v iuklc Hon ve, nali-wav. the shy school-girls were for indulging a little sentiment ovei the 'old legend, but the bov, who concealed his ijruorance of the Irving romance until his cousins had prattled the outlines of it, was not to be taken In by any such chaff, and though he was a little staggered by Rip's own cottage and by the bight of the cave above it which is labelled as the very spot where the vagabond took his long nap, he attempted' to bully the at tendant and drink-mixer m;tuo hut, and openly flaunted his incredulity until the bar-tender showed him a long bunch of Hip's hair, ,which hung like a scalp on the nail, and the rusty barrel and stock of the musket. The cabin is, indeed, full of old guns, pi.stbls, locks of lair, buttons, cartridge-boxes, bullets. Knives, and other undoubted relics oi Kip and the Revolution. ,This cabin, with its facilities for slaking thirst on a hot day which Rip would have appreci ated, over a hundred years old accord ing to information to be obtained on the spot, is really of unknown antiquity, the old boards and timber of which it is con structed having been brought down from the mountain House j some forty years ago. ('harles Dudley Warner, in Harper s Magazine Jor May. Justice Field tells how his pride had a all. When he was a young man he was particularly proud of his erect form and fine, curling hair. Walking one day with head well up he ran against a cart and injured his knee. The injury resulted in permanent lameness and a consequent fctoop in his shoulders. Afterward hard study produced brain ever, and a llv-blister cured the fever and, destroyed Ids waving locks. I ! ""I They strolled along the broad parade, John Jenes and pretty Miss Maria.
