Distribution of another pay ment, though comparatively a small one, through cooperative re ceiving points in Eastern North Carolina from July 1 until July 7, added to the checks whifeb have recently been distributed in the South Carolina belt and those to be distributed shortly in Virginia, will run the money end of the To bacco Growers' Cooperative Asso ciation's first quarterly setth-intuit above a million dollars. More than half a million was distributed in the South Caroliua belt several days ago and with tbe checks went to each member a ffill, detailed statement showing what grades of tobacco had been marketed and for what they were cold by the association for him. Cordial approval of growers throughout the South Carolina belt has been given to tbe new quarterly statement method of payment. While tbe total in Eastern North Carolina is not so large as the South Carolina total, it is made upon the same new basis of settlement ordered by the associa tion directors. Checks going into Eastern Carolina are for only a few grades which have been sold. They cover, in the main, the lower grades of tcrap including 81, 87, 88, 89, 810, 811, B Scrap, Dl, D 2, DO, DlO, D Scrap, EO, F6, and H7. Eastern Carolina growers may receive these checks, with slate meuts, at their receiving points from July 1 to July 7 but after the latter date it will be necessary for them to send their participa tion receipts to Richmond. The stetriy cooperative checks, providing cash money in leau seasons as well as iu the fat ones, is attracting more now con tracts than anything else, accord ing to cooperative workers in the ttouth Carolina belt. The quarterly statement system is meeting with distinct approval for it furnishes the grower au op portunity, at ail times, to take a satisfactory inventory of bis as sets to aheck against his bills pay able, or liabilities. After the Eastern CaroliDa dis tribution, which began last Wed nesday, checks and quarterly statements will be distributed in the old belt of Virginia and North Carolina covering payment on all grades sold up to May 81. Bon' And Gvls' Calf Clubs. There is probably no one thing which is doing more to interest farm boys and girls in live stock than Is the club work. In sec tions of tbe country where cattle have au important plaoe on the farm, calf clubs arc being organ ised and carried out with the best of results One of the essentials in making club work of any kind a succees is to have a good leador or organ izer at the head of it. The loader may be an agricultural county agent, a teacher, a oowjester, or anyone else in a community who knows about live stock aud who at the same time is vitally inter ested in the welfare of the young people. In organizing a calf club the leader prepares an interesting project which includes plans for each member to take complete charge of the_feedinK and devel opment of a calf. Blanks are furnished, on which each member records the amounts and kinds of feed fed, and an account of the costs pre kept. Where it is pos sible to do so, each club member weighs his or her calf at regular intervals in order to know def initely about the gains being The keeping of records gives a boy or girl a very definite idea of the amount of feed and the cost of raising a calf. It also teaches them to be systematic and care fnl( a training whieh is valuable wherever applied. Members look forward to the date in late summer or early fall, all of the calves of a elpb will be assembled for inspection Ht a ronndnp or fair. It is impor tant that each member make a good exhibit of his animal at this time, when the calves are judged by a person competent to do 80. , A calf to be in condition for in spection must tie io good flesh but not necessarily fat. Tbe hide should be pliable, aud iu this a blanket is of assistance. Blank eting also helps to keep the hair iu good coudition. Iu the case of dairy calves, it is advisable to clip them all over a month to six weeks before they are exhibited. This will allow a nice, even growth uf hair to develop, which will add greatly to the animals appoarauce. It is vtfry important that a calf be taught to lead and to stand. If the animal shows the lack ot proper training its good points will not be shown to an advantage. Members of sheep aud pig clubs receive a training equally tut in teresting and instructive a* that eujoyed by members of u calf club. It all helps to develop a liking for farm animals and an appreciation of the good results that are possible when good care and treatment are given.
