Text ?f the Lesson, II Chron. xxxr 1327?Memory Vdrocs, 18-20?Golden Text, I Sam. xvi, 7?Commentary Prepared by Rev. D. M. Stearns. This Ilezckiah, whose iiume "signiflea "the strength of Jehovah," was ?no of the best kings that reigned over the kingdom of Juduh. In the sixth yeai of his reign the king of Assyria carried the ten tribes into captivity, us we shall lenrn more fully in next week's lesson (II Kings xix, 10-12). The king of Assyria threatened to do to Judah as lie had done to Israel and wrote a blasphemous letter which Uezekiah spread before the Lord, and he and the prophet Isoiali prayed^and cried to heaven, and the-Lord sent an angel w^y smote in one- night 1S6.00C of the Assyrian nrmy. (II Klugs xix, 35; II Cliyon. xxxli, 10-21). Ahaz, the father of Heaekialf, had done very wickedly. He worshiped other goda, cut In pieces the vessels of the house of God, shut up the doors of the house of the Lord and made him altars In every corner of Jerusalem and iu the cities of Judah. Therefore the Lord did bring Judah low because of him (II Chron. xxvlii, 19-25). Ilezeklnh in the first month of the first year of hla reign opened the doors of the house of the Lord nnd repaired them and set the priests aud Lev ilea at wofk to cleanse the temple, whl?b they did in sixteen days. Then they offered sin offerings unto the Lord foi all Israel, and burnt offerings, and thank offerings, and worshiped th? Lord with gladness. "So the service of the house of the Lord was set in order, and Hezeklah rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people, for the thing was done end denly" (chapter xxlx, 3. 17, 24, 27, 31, 36) The regular time to keep the Passover In the first month being past because of tho time It took to cleanse the temple, It was determined to keep It In the second month, as was permitted In the law (Num. lx, 9-11). Proclamation was therefore mad? throughout all Israel from Dan tc Becrshoba that they shorild come tc koep the Passover unto the Lord God of Israel at Jerusalem, for It wai a long time since the feast had been kept (verse* 1-8). The last of which we have a record was In the days ol Joshua. when at Gllgal they kept 11 upon entering tho land (Josh, v, 10), Before that there Is a record of only two Passovers, one In Egypt and one a year later at Slnal. After the time of our lesson wc have oply a record, of two more in the Old Testament, the great one of Josiab and the one In the days of Ezra at the dedication of the temple after the return from Babylon (II Clirou. xxxv, IS; Ez. vi. 19-22). We can sAareely think that these were the only Passovers kept, but these six are the only ones recorded. If we include the one that tl?e Lord Jesus so greatly desired to keep with his disciples (Luke xxil), thou we have a record of just seven great Passovers. Of the lessons foi our own souls let us never forget the words, "When I see the blood 1 will pass over you." It was not the blood and something else, but simply and only the applied blood of the slain iamD mat gave surety. See Lev. xvll, 11; Heb. ix, 22; Rev. 1, 5, 6; v, 9. 10; vii. 14; Eph. 1, 7. Nothing can by any means add to the safety which is ours in Christ Jesus, but because of it may the Lord grant ua a great appetite for the Lamb, and as Ho,lived by the Father may we, eating Him, live by Him (John vl, 57). This call to all Israel to turn to the Lord might truly be spoken of as a last call to the ten tribes, for six years later they were carried nTptTve by the king of Assyria. As the posts passed from city to city, through Ephralm and Manusseh, even unto Zebulnn, some laughed them to scorn and mocked them, but some humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem (verses 10, 11). Verse 12 seems to teach that God can bless only those who are willing that Fie should lay Ills band upon them for good. Until He shall come again in power and-plory we cannot expect anything different from Acts xxviil. 24, "Some believed, and some believed not." Wheat and tares will, grow together until the end of the age. Notwithstanding the rebellious ones a very Jjreat congregation assembled at Jerusalem to keep the Passover (verso 1"). Tray cleansed the city of idolaters anoCkllled the Passover and kept the feas\ not only for seven days, but so great\was their Joy because they had truly turned to the Lord and He had so blessed them that they kept the feast fofc another seven days. There was greater Joy in Jerusalem than had been slnc^tbe days of Solomon. Hezefciata spake comfortably or to the heart oA,all the Levi tea that taught the good knowledge of the Lord (verse 22, margin), and so h* was greatly used of God in th*krevival. The ttible la a heart book, Yrom vhe heart >f God to the hearts on His people Osa rl, 1, 2, margin), and \if His word gov not reach our hearts with comfon and strength ws should pray, "Olve Thy servant a hearing* heart" (I Kings ltL 9, margin). WhaJ a splendid record of this king Is found In chapter xxxl, 20, 21, "He wrought-that which waa goad and right tad truth before the Lore his God He iUd tt with a) his heart and prospered."
