'L' V Text of the Lesion, Jer. xxvi. 7-19. e Momopy Vopsea. 13, 14?Golden Textj J Pe. xxvii. 1?Commentary Ppepaped by Rev. D. M. 8tearna. Jeremiah was a faithful messenger e of the Lord God of Israel and coveted ? only the approval of Him who sent ? him. Ho was therefore bated by the t- false prophets and by all who would 4 not submit to God. The Lord told him j* that It would be so when He called ,( him to be a prophet and said: 'Speak d unto them all that I command thee; be a not dismayed at their facea. They shall flgbt against tbee, but they shall e not prevail against tbee. for 1 am with 7 thee, salth the Lord, to deliver thee" a (Jer. 1. 17, 19; XV. 20). J" After he bad been eighteen years a i! prophet (compare Jer. 1. 2; II Chron. jj xxxlv, 1) and Jebotaklm was now r- king, his brother Jehoahai having reigned only three months (II Chron. >n xxxvl, 1-4), the word of the Lord came ? again to Jeremiah saying, "Speak all ly tbe words that 1 command thee to ? speak unto them; diminish not a word" t (Jer. xxvi, 2). Because of Jeremiah's jj faithfulness In delivering the Lord's message against the city and the tem? pie the priests and the prophets took 1, him and gathered the people agalnat him to put him to death (verses 7-11). ~ The reason of their hatred Is seen In Ithe description given of them In previous chapters. "A wonderful and horrible thing Is committed In the land? tbe prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means, and Mv nonnla lorn tn horo !# aA? "Wwa? T-# 1 ? ? one. from the least even unto the greatest, is given to covetousness; from the prophet even unto the priest, every one dealeth falsely." "Both prophet and priest are profane; yea. in My house have I found their wickedness. salth the Lord" (Jer. v. 30, 31; vili, 10; xxiii, 11). See the same state of affairs described in Isa xxlx. 13; .-xxx. 0-13. With such an alliance against God on the part or the people and their teachers we cannot wonder at their persecution of such a man of God as Jeremiah. It has always been so. and ,-tbe Lord Jesus when on earth said that it would be so throughout this age also (Matt, x, 10-18; John xv. 18-21; xvi, 1-3). We cannot bo faithful to God and on good terms with the world, lying in the wicked one. Back i of all persecutors of the people of God I we must see the great persecutor and | destroyer, the father of lies. | In verses 12 to 15 we have Jcremlj ah's defense, and his only plea is. "Of | a truth the Lord hatli sent me unto I you to speak all these words in your | ears." He did not fail to exhort them j to amend their ways and their doings and to obey the voice of the Lord their | God. and then ho added, do what you j please with me. but know that if you ! kill me you will kill an innocent man. | | The princes und the people then took ! Jeremiah's part against the priests 1 j and the prophets because he had spo! ken In the name of the Lord their God, j and they recall the fact that in the I days of Hezokiah the Prophet Micnli ! was-a faithful witness for the Lord | of hosts against Jerusalem, but that I Ilezeklah, instead of killing him, reI pouted before the Lord, and the Lord | i kept back the evil which otherwise 1 would have come upon them. Mlcnh | told them plainly that thoy Judged for i reward, taught for hire and divined I for money, vet nrofessed to loan tinnn the Lord (Mle. 111. 11). Hezekiah. knew this to be all true, hnd he hum% bled himself before God and repented, i- The last part of our lesson chapter e! tells of another true man of God who i prophesied as Jeremiah did, and when j Jeholaklm sought to kill him he fled Into Egypt, but the king had him _ ' brought back out of Egypt and put to death. The difference in the fate of j those two men makes us think of 0 James, the brother of John, whom ; Herod killed with the sword, and Pe| ter, who was saved from a slmllur fute by an nngel (Acts xii). It Is always a gain for a true child of God to die, but : it is sometimes better for tiie people of God on the earth and for sinners - 1 who may through them be saved to j continue yet awhile here.iPhil. i. ) | 20-20). Jeremiah was a prophet of the Lord for forty years until Judah was fully carried captive in the days of 7,edcki^ ah, and he seems to have had to con' | tend with lying prophets all the way i through, fo cue of whom (lie Lord told j him to say, "This year thou sjinlt die, I because 'thou hast taught rebellion I against the Lord." So he died that I same year (chapter xxviil. 15-17). We I can alwuys safely ieave ourselves In j the hands of the Lord, but we cannot j do otherwise than believe and obey ! Ilim. The Illustration of the Iterhn| bites, who obeyed Jonadab, their father, in the matter of drinking no t wine, hnvlng no vineyards and build' lng no houses, as recorded in chapter xxxv, was a very striking object lesson and a stinging rebuke to God's disov bedient people, but they did not lay it \ to heart V What an old story It is. but what a sad story, that people will profess in words to be the Lord's people, but in theu\lives deny Him by covetonsness and worldlness and self seeking and pleasing, as if they could deceive God., who reads the heart, and to whom an things are naked and open. * %. v* ' - * ' .
