SUNDAY SCHOOL
Lesson X.?Third Quarter, For
Sept. 3, 1911. ?
THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES,
Text of th? '-anon, a Comprehonaiva
Quarterly iteview?Goldeh Text, Ps.
xxxiv, 14?Commentary Prepared by
Rev. D. M. Stearns.
Lesson 1. ?Isaiah's prophecy concerning
Sennacherib (Isu. xxxvii, 14S8?.
Golden Text. !*?*. xlvi. 1. "God is
our refuge and strength, a very present
help ";n trouble," Sennacherib is in
the line of Cain and Pharaoh and oil
enemies of God and Ills people to be
consummated in the blaspheming antichrist
of the last days, back of whom
and through whom U always seen the
deyll. The devotion of Hezekiah to
the living and true God was too much
lur iut- greui uuversury, una so ne
stirred up the king of Assyria against
Hezeklah. But see how two men who
knew God prevailed in prayer.
Lesson II.?The suffering servant of
Jekovuh (Isa. 111. 3. to nil. 12). Golden
Text, lsa. Itll. 0. "The Lord bath brid
on Him the iniquity of ,us all." We
find this record right lu the midst of
the last part of lsainh. the middle
chapter of the middle section, and the
middle verse is liii. 5, which gives us
the heart of all Scripture. If with His
stripes we have been healed, then as
His redeemed ones stnnding against
the world, the flesh and the devil, we
| must be content to suffer with Him
and count It a great privilege (Phil. 1,
I 2$; I f*et. Iv. 13; v, 1. IUi. We shall
be satisfied when He is (1111, 11).
Lesson III.?Manasseh's wickedness
and penitence (II Chron. xxxlil, 1-20).
Golden Text, lsa. 1. 1G. 17. "Cease to
do evil, learn to do well." Of all the
wicked kings of the teu tribes none
exceeded Ahab in wickedness, but
Manasseh in Judah seems to have excceded
him. By compariug II Kings
xxl with our lesson chapter we see
how fearful the record Is. It looks as
fit he did the very worst that he could
j do. The conversion of such a wicked
man should greatly encourage parents
| who have ungodly children, for God Is
I full of mercy.
Lesson IV.?Joslah's devotion to God
(II Chron. 111. 4. 1-13). Golden Text,
Eccles. xli, I. "Remember now thy
Creator in the days of thy youth."
This boy king probably knew only of
bis father's zeal for God. and may
have been thus Inspired with a similar
zeal. When he was only sixteen he
began to seek God earnestly, and when I
he was twenty he purged the land
from Idolatry end did that which the,
man of God said 300 years before that ,
h he would do (I Kings xlIL 2; II Kings!
xxili. 1G). Wbeu he was twenty-six
he begun to repair the house of the
Lord his God.
Lesson V..?The finding of the book
of the law (II Chron. xxxlv. 14-33).
Golden Text. Ps. cxix, 11. "Thy word
have I hid in my heart that I might
not sin against Thee." As be went
on lu bis good work. God gave him
more light by causing the book of the
law to be found. This was a fulfill-;
ment of (lie word. "Then shall we j
know If we follow ou to know the i
Lord" (IIos. vi. 3). If we act up to the'
light we have. God will In some way]
I send us more. The Lord knew that j
| Joslah would inquire into this and be
obedient and humble himself before I
cioil.
Lesson VI.? Jeremiah tried and nc-!
quitted (.Tor. xxvl. 7-19). Golden Text, j
Ps. xxvlU 1. "The Lord Is my light and 1
my salvation, whom shall T fear?" It j
seems strange that priests and prophets ,
of the Lord should want to'kill a man i
because he spoke the^ words of the |
Lord, simply because the message did
not suit them, but there were in those
days, and there are today, professed'
messengers of the Lord whom He I
never sent, prophets of the deceit of1
their own heart speaking lies in His
name (.ler. xxtll. 14. 10, 21. 27?. 20i.
Lesson VII.?.leboinkim Jjurns the
prophet's hook (Jer. xxxvi. 20-32).
Golden Text. Isa. xl. 8. "The word of
our God shall stand forever." It was
not the prophet's book, but the Lord's
book, which the king cut up and buroed
In the fire, but the book was written
again luuuedlutely In a larger edition,
and the Lord attended to .Teholakim.
There are many now who seem to
have no fojy of God while professing
to be His messengers and who ruth,
lessly set aside large portions of Scripture.
calling them myths and fables.
The Lord will see to them, and Ps.
cxlx, 80. stands.
Lesson VIII.?Jeremiah cast into
prison (Jor. xxxvli. 4-21). Golden
Text. Matt v, 11. "Blessed are ye
when mar. shnll revile you and persecute
you and shall say all mantigr of
evil against you falsely for My sake."
He Is still hated and persecuted for
the truth's sake, even ns many were
before IIim, and are now and will be
till the kingdom comes (John xv. 1821;
xvl. 1*3>. The father of lies cannot
stand the truth nnd will not if he
can help it. but he cannot lay a finger
on any child of God without permission
and then only as far as permitted.
Lesson IX.?Judah carried captive to
Babylon (Jer. xxxlx. 1-10). Golden
Text. Num. xxxil. 28. "Be sure your
sin will tlnd you out." Notwithstanding
all the peaceful words of the false
prophet* the word of the Lord by
Jeremiah was literally fulfilled 1n due
time. This age of so called progress,
which is the progress of all things to
be controlled by one devil possessed
man. the antichrist, will end by the
overthrow of ill things that can be
shaken, and then shall come the kingdom
of peace and righteousness.
