College Wins Holiday Doobleheader Hurricanes Reach For And Get Win Epsom Teams Split With Zeb Vance A fourth quarter rally by Ep som high boys was good (or a 86-56 victory over the Zeb Vance High Rebels, while the Rebels got an even break for the evening as the girls won a 2{*-27 thriller over Epsom las sies In the opener. The non conlerence basketball double header was staged on the hard wood at Zeb Vance last Wed nesday night. Each team had three boys In double scoring figures. Lead ers for Epsom were Llnwood Patterson, with 16 points, Mike Smith, with IS, and Nelson Hedgepeth, with eleven. For Zeb Vance It was Allen Stone, 18, Steve Satterwhlte, IS, and Carl Satterwhlte, who added ten. The battle was nip and tuck until the final quarter. The Rebels were out front by 11-10 In the first stanza, then Ep som's Tigers recovered for a 26-24 halftlme margin, in the third period Zeb Vance re gained the margins 44-42, but the Tigers again filled In the fourth quarter to move away by ten points. Zeb Vance girls avenged an earlier loss to Epsom lassies by pulling outWednesday night's decision, 29-27. Now each holds a perfect record for the season except for one loss to each other. The skirmish went down to the wire before the outcome was decided. The halftlme count was 14-13, with the Rebels on the big end. In the final two minutes of play, Zeb Vance trailed by 27 23, then forward Mildred Keith was fouled twice and made all four free throws to knot the count at 27-27. The Hurricanes held off a Har grave" comeback attempt In the second half Saturday night, to win the Holiday event, 76-69. Loulsburg held a 41-27 halftlme advantage over the Virginia school. In Friday's action, Jesse Par rlsh and Jim Edwards staged 20-polnt performances each to pace Loulsburg to victory, ably supported by Bryan Hasklns with 13 and Bob Greasman with 1.2. Robert McNamara, Secretary of De fense, said that the closing of the 95 military Installations, great and small, will not di minish the fighting ability of the armed forces. Over the last four years 574 United States military bases have been closed around the world. The Pentagon chief said these bas es "have outlived their useful ness for military mission." Conference Play Begins Tonight In County When the tlpoff comes tonight at Bunn between the Edward Best boys and girls and the Bunn boys and girls, the Frank lin County League basketball season will be started. Five of the seven schools have al ready played several non-con ference games with teams from surrounding counties. Frank Unton and Loulsburg. start their "Spring Training" tonight In non-conference games. The Rams play Zeb Vance at Frank llnton and the Bulldogs meet Littleton here. ' Gold Sand boys and Epsom girls are defending champions in the league. The boys won 12 and lost none last season while the Epsom girls scrapped Edward Best girls to the wire to win the title In a playoff game ending the season with a 11-2 record while Edward Best finished 10-3. Edward Best girls received some measure of revenge by defeating Epsom In the County Tournament for the Champion ship, 37-27. In the girls' di vision, the order of flpUh last year Is: Epsom, Edward Best, Bunn (8-4), Gold Sand (7-5), Frankllnton (4-8), Loulsburg (3-9) and Youngsvllle (0-12.) The order of finish In the boys' division last season was: Gold Sand (0-12), Epsom (7-5), -Edward Best (6-6), Loulsburg (6-6), Buifti (6-6), Youngsvllle (5-7) and Frankllnton (0-12). Epsom boys lead the grape fruit league thus far this year. They have won 5 and lost 1 game. Their girls lead their division with the sarae record. Epsom boys lost to Aycock and the girls lost only to Zeb Vance. Gold Sand girls have won 2 and lost 3 thus far and their boys have won 2 and lost three. Ed ward Best girls have won four and lost two while their boys have won three and lost three. Youngsvllle girls have lost all six of their games while the boys have won 2 and lost four. The college owns approximate ly eighteen acres of undeveloped land on the west campus, part of which will be used for base ball and track in the coming spring. All work on the project Is being donated by interested I friends. Gregory Poole, Jr., \ college trustee, of Gregory I Poole Equipment Company, s Raleigh, N. C., Is supervising ( the work and donating the use of heavy machinery with oper- t ators for grading the area. The Athletic Depart Gold Sand Drops Two At Rolesville The Rolesvllle boys and girls utilized three points to take a doubleheader basketball slate from the Gold Sand boys and girls last Tuesday night. The girls' game found Gold Sand on the short end of a 28-26 score and the defending cham pion Franklin County boys fell, 72-71. The boys' contest was decided in an overtime as Rolesvllle scored six points while Gold Sand mustered only five. Cin dy Raynor led the Gold Sand girls with 18 points and Mlt zle Tharrlngton, former Youngsvllle player, led Roles vllle with 13. In the boys' contest, BUI Hlght and Kenny Clark were high with 18 points each while Parker led the win ners with 23 points. Gold Sand plays tonight at Townsvllle and will play their first conference game at Ed ward Best Friday night.
