"Bui trrvat s is the future which is .-ptfiittl In-tore us bj this magnificent country. It lora not. begin to compre lieuil tiitr tuil measure of that which is I a More for us. "Reaching the Tennes see line, no matter which route may be selected, we are brought into immedi ate connection., with other great roads, through Tennessee. and. Kentucky, to the West and the Northwest; and the contributions of freight and passengers which we will receive from those roads, without saying anything of our im mense local business, will more than justify the construction of our road. " From Ash evil le, . in. -7 Buncombe county, tia the Paint Rock,' to Morris town in Tennessee, we meet a leading road from Louisville, Kentucky. This road is already in operation from Louis- vill to Crab Orchard, a distance of 115 miles. It is under contract to London, a distance of 47 miles farther, to be completed this fall; and it will make its southern terminus either at Knoxvllle or by way of Cumberland Gap, at Mor ristown. The leading object of its pro jectors was a connection with the At iantic coast . by means of the system of ri! roads chartered by North and South Carolina. Like the road from Morris-t-wQ to Paiut Rock, it is in the hands o focrgtic and accomplished rail road ne 1. vfio jre fully alive to the impor i ice ot thf cojinection and who have he in -ana tit completing 'their end of ie ?iue. lom? before we can complete our, even under the , mnst favorable 'tcMhimiM, Nothing, then, is need t tn induce them to come to Morris to vn ' u' the assurance that we can and w H in"' ! them t the Tennessee line. IVie very moment that we. reach that pint the connection is read for ns; and the slightest attention to the coon try will convince any one that it is a ciuotctiou of the very first importance. We will have almost an air line from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ohio River. We will pass through a great and growing country, rich in all tile productions oi c raraerce; and, we offer them a route to intrket as god as, if not the Very Ik-si , t which J the T country h can aiTcrdi T- . l I i M fr tuc (jiuuuuubi ui jbuicra a ennes aee, Janl for those of all Kentucky ln 1 nded for the Southern Atlantic coast, we will stand without a competitor ; and we can present, by far, the shortest, quickest, and in every way the most at tractive route to pajDgersfroa ; tba tamo section of coaotry, to tfca ITcrtb 7c:--ra CUtc3, to the Tcrrit--" to C ifcrda, by Y7ay of Lc .ill:, Loul aud.t' -t "teat IV.cific : .iLRc Jc' -.ins. the ".."estcra ITcrtL Carol: . In either case, the line from the Atlantic to theMi&siasippi will not Vary more than one degree north or sputh of an air line ; : and gives us an advantage which li not possessed ' by any other through - line In the country. Looking beyond the Mississippi, then, we can offer the Terj best line in the whole country, to the .Southern - Pacific, by way of Memphis, Little Rock, and El Paso a route in which the Ohio River States are deeply interested, and which beyond El Paso, being merged into the South Western Pacific, with the govern ment grant, is certain -.to be pushed to completion long before 'the Southern Pacific, through Texas, can possibly be built. ' ''!''..':'':,;. :y Io the direction of the Cranberry Iron Works, by availing ourselves of the privileges of the charter to theKortb Western Rail Road Company, passed by the last General mbly we, baye a connection with the East Tennessee and Virginia flail Road, and have the ad vantage of its connections. A road has been chartered and surveyed from Bris tol to the Cumberland Gap, but its pro gress seems to be dependent, in some way, upon the consolidation of certain Virginia and Tennessee roads a meas ure which has exercised the minds of the stockholders ot these Companies tor aome time past, but which: has not yet been" decider!. With the. aid of. this road our communication: with the Ohio would be quite as direct as by the routes of which we bave-alretrdy-pokenj UuT our communication with the Mississippi would be much less . direct ; and in this point of view this route is much less de sirable for ns. But there are facts con nected with it which are well worthy of your most attentive consideration, The country which our ' own road would cross is of well ascertained great natu ral wealth, and, within our own State, we would be without, a competing line for the transportation of its products. In a national point of view, as a milita ry measure, as a source of great wealth and strength to the whole country, the development of its immense iron inter est, at some future day, will commend itself to the General Government ; and the road upon whlch .it depends for transportation, to a certain; extent, will be invested with a national character. M These connections being made and, in process of time they will all be made as surely as self-interest governs man, our seaport terminus, will 'then be nearer to Nashville, Enoxville, Mem phis, Louisville, t Indianapolis, Cairo and St. Louis than any other on the Atlantic coast. It , will be as near to Cincinnati as Baltimore is, and as near to Chicago as New York ; and, though we do not expect to compete with these great cities in the carrying trade of the world, yet . there are thousands of tons of freight, which are shipped first to these cities, thence to our own seaports, and thence to the interior, which must, and will come over these roads' direct to their destination. The city of Wil mington, rtheoi may furnish the' whole ot Western North Carolina, and East ern Tennessee and Kentucky with West India produce, tor New Orleans itself cannot compete with us beyond those points which are watered by the Mis sissippi, and its navigable tributaries.
