We hate, always noticed that they were will ing to take a Republican's money in piyment for goods. Even the churches are willing to accept, aid . from such sources, but they teem to feel as though x they could not advertise in a paper of Vppotc' politics from themselves be cause they ore contributing to the sup- '4 T.ThftPofiT aslca no r.lmrWv l nflorm v--- ' fc .-- Its cplnmjbc City Merchants, as a - meatum lor. reaching a-puog; qC the 3 ;eopiecanpgton. There are two Democratic n4 oBe Republican paper in the city, an d yet we sometimes see merchants advef-j tising in both Democratic papers and ignoring the . Republican paper.' " Thar man say. almost as plainly as if it were printed in so many words, that he does not de&iro Republican patronage. Adver tising is not a question ot political strategy, i It is simply an exhibition ot business lite and enterprise which wise men have made and reaped the benefits therefor. We do not claim that all mer chants who do not advertise with us. are i illiberal, nor do we wish it to be under- stood that we intimate that none but Re publicans advertise with us. Many of our patrons arc old line staunch died in the wool Democrats, but this dont ei iect the value of their wares. It proves them to be wide awake business men, who avail themselves of every opportu nity, and they are reaping its benefits. Competition is the lie of trade. Were there but one paper in this city adver tising would be very high. As it is, the prices are equitable and just. The Post advises Republican dealers to advertise in Democratic papers as well as those of their own political taith. On the other hand it asks a share ot the Wil mington patronage from raercbaats whp are anxious to increase their business and don't believe ia mixing politics or religion with trade. The Raleigh .iVttf 8 gives us a history of the J. Russell Jones transaction with Gcu. GraDt. The New York Tribune has lied and relied on this slander, only it placed the land near Galena, Hlinois. The slander started with a statement that Mr. Jones had sold a tract of land near Galena for one dollar to the Presi dent, and had then received the mission to Belgium. This the President, and J. Russejl Jenes denied. Now, ,the Keics says that "Mr. Jon& in considera tion of the sum of one dollar donated to the President of the United States thirty-one acres of land in- Chicago, worth many thousands of dollars." And then follows many ironical questions like the fellowiDg, 'Does not the whole country belong to Grant ?" and again "who will alter this dare charge him with corruption ?" and many more of the like. These "schemes are as glass," and altogether too thin to deceive an; one at all posted on policical affairs. But the danger of such slanders is, thbt they arc read and believed by men who see Dut few papers and the boldness of the slander carried ah impress of hon esy on its face, which wouid deceive i :e unwary. We expect to see many ni ie guch artieies as the campaign dr.i AS to a el'-sp, and these democratic papers ''virdautij" publishes them, and we fear actually believe they are writing tacts! Poor fellows, how terribly they are themselves deceived. Those Tickets. A friend sends us a couple of ticket of a lot captured from Blumenburg at Weldon. It will be recollected that this man was imported here with Filkins and Wood to assist the fraud shouting Democrats to carry this State for Mer rimon, in which they did not succeed. These tickets arc printed on very fine paper and neatly covered wifh inucil lage on the back. They are quite a cu riosity and worth an examination. Still the nice little game did'nt carry the State. We acknowledge the receipt of a complimentary ticket to the " Fair of the Caroiioas," to be held at Cbarlottte from Oct 22d to the 27th. We cordial ly endorse all Fairs or anything else which will promote the interests of the farmers, and hope this Fair will prove an unbounded success. EDITORIAL BUDGET.
