The - Daily Review JOSH. .-T.I JAMBS, Ed. and Prop WILMINGTON, IS. C. THURSDAY, AUGUST 2. 1877. THE CAUSE OF THE STRIKE. It has come out, says the Charleston Noes and&uricr, that the ila.ly wacs paid to firemen and brakemen Ly the Iiallimore and Ohio Kail road Company trcre lower than those paid on the other through lines, crcn before the rejection. The reductions took them down to j a day for a portion of the men, but that was not the chief grievance. It is fctate 1 by the men that they were paid only for the tima they worked, and they j;ot only about four "days' pay a week, ttiwj; obligedlo lie off from two lo three at points distant from their homes, and to pay for their board there. -A a ton .se quence au average of seventy-lire tent a a day or less was all that was left thorn with which to support their families. Xow here is a clear and palpable grievance, a just cause of complaint, and the (strike at Hartinsburg, nilh all its d.-plurolk- toii tquencs elsewhere, appears to have been occasioned by the action of the company, which "it is hard to justiiiy. And the worst of it is that the Baltimore and Ohio is one of the richest and nut powerful roads in the country, one that has contin ued to pay its ten per cent, dividends. The ne, m the nanus oi a receiver and paying its stockholders nothing, kept wages up much higher.. Whatever plea may be made vn account of business depression and lailh: off in receipts, it dues not justify Mich a reduction in wages as that on this great line of communication with the Wist, so long as it pays large dividend r.ud munificent salaries to it3 oflicers. The cut-down manifestly began at the wron-end- The men arc right when they claim that tho salaries of ofiiccrs and managers and the profits of stockholders should take a fair share of the Io;s. In fact their sacrifice should be ma'de first. They also make a strong point when they claim that, by reckless management, cutthroat competition for freight, needless cxpeu diturts and heavy debts, incurred in ill advised enterprises, great losses have been brought upon the companies, from which the employees should not bo the tlrtt to suffer. Looking back over tho lat ex citing week we find much to deplore and to condemn; but we do not hesitate to say that in the original dilliculty with the Tl.lltm.M nrtil Yin 1Y?iHrvii! nil Mi'mHIif. 1.1 1 fcl U I V 1 V U11U vuav .', - - of wages paid to firemen and brakemen and their general treatment, "the .company was'largely in fauilt, unless our informatiun it incorrect. officiaiTdouble-exdeks.
