Wood, and an hour and a half later took the train for a bridal trip to New York. Dr. Stephen B. Evans died at his residence onDavie avenue Tuesday night, after a long sickness. Dr. Evans was a native of Pitt county, was a colonel in the Confederate army, bad lived in New Berne and moved to this place front Golds bo ro twelve or fifteen years ago. He was engaged in the prac tice of his profession until four or fire years ago, when his health fail ed ;and though he has rallied occa sionally tince, he has never been able for active dutv. The funeral exercises were conducted this morn ing by Rev. 8. P. Watters. Wht Jiwtlc" Say. Mr. Editor: Your local reporter was only partially correct in his account of Thursday night's fire. The energetic engineer of the Adrian saw the fire before the alarm was sounded, and started his hose eart away on good time and had the hoe laid'ahead of any other, but failing to get the pipe on before the water reached the end, they wem compelled to shut down, and while making this very necessary connec tion, the Atlantic boys came ou in fine shape and put the first water .on the fire. It is only necetsary to examine the scene to settle beyond a doubt as to who held the key to the situation and did the most effec tive work. Justick. Church Srv!re To-JIorrow. st Tul mtacon!
