The two splendid steamships which the Inman line is addiner to its fleet are the best illustration of the pres ent tendencies in marine architec ture. The ships that in the past year have been leaving the stocks in Scotland and England are built more largely of steel than of iron, have considerably increased the av erage carrying capacity, and the greater tonnage is devoted rather to passenger than freight accommoda tions. 'It is also noteworthy that improvements in planning and con struction and more enduring mater ials have resulted in vessels of abet ter type, and even newer forms of engines are being introduced which, it is said, can be more economical ly worked. None of the building arts has recently made such progress as naval architecture, and the terrors of the sea are constantly dwindling before the enhanced comforts and conveniences now provided for the "travelling public. The new German 'Emperor has created three field marshals already the Grand Duke of Baden, Prince Albrecht of Prussia and .Prince George of Saxony-, heir presumptive to. the throne of Saxony. Prince George Is the second son of the late King John of Saxony, and was born in August, 1832. He received a mil itary education, entered early into the artillery, and gave the first proofs of his ability in the campaign of 1866, during which he command ed a brigade of cavalry as major general. In the beginning of the Franco- German war of 1870 he com manded the 1st division of the Sax ony Army Corps, but after the bat tle of Metz, when his elder brother was appointed commander-in-chief of the 4th army, he received the command of the whole army corps. and led it with distinction in the- encounters of Nouart and Beau mont, in the battle of Sedan, and during the siege of Paris. After the war he retained his command with the rank of general. . -m . '. The director estimates that last year the net gain to the country of bullion and coin by im- ports was $28,ow.(XKJ, anu ' that we used m the lutiustriai. arts, about 14,500,000 worth of gold and $5,000,- , - ., mi x 000 worth of silver. The product of these precious iiietals in the United States appears to be more than one third that of the whole world. In 188G the world produced about $99, 000,000 of gold and $128,000,000 of silver. If, however, our production ' of these metals is large for oar pop ulation our consumption of them is proportionately large andseemingly extravagant The world's annual consumption of gold and silver, as nearly as can be determined, is"" re spectively $46,000,000 and $22,000,000. The population of the United States cannot now be more than 5 per cent, that of the world, but we se in the industrial arts not far from 30 per cent, of all the gold and 22 per cent, of all the silver similarly con sumed by all the world.
