There is a brace' of siig-' gestive stories, "Two Opportuni ties," showing girls and boys who live at the snmmtr resorts how they can earn some money. Miss Risley Seward has an entertaining paper, rtAn Abyssinian Monkey.'' Edward Everett Hale .writes of some of the on Boston Common. There is a fine article by Rev. H. O. Ladd, the President of the University of New Mexico, describing the Raiu'ona In dustrial School for Indian girls, and appealing to the youth of America to h elp build the Ramona Memorial Hall, which ' shall .be a perpetual home-school for Indian girls. The Wide Awace govs ana erins are in vited to build the dining room, which is to be known as the "Wide Awake Refectory." There is an excellent article on Daniel Defoe and another on the odd people 6f Corea. ' The poems are all good; Wide Awake is $2.40 a year. D. Lothrop Company, publishers, Bos ton, Mass. - A Substitute for Jute, ' South Carolina now has a word to say' on th question of a substitute for jute bagging. A dispatch from Columbia says that "Capt. J. .A. Peterketi, the great cotton planter, living at Fort Motte, near Columbia has solved - the problem that has been agitating cotton planters since the formation of the jute trust. He has ordered "extensive machinery for the purpose of making wood bag ging (or cotton to take the place Qf jute. The bagging can be made of sweet gum, "elm, or. any swamp wood, and will ; be of veneer one ojgth of onlnch thick, When this is used, the cotton will be thorough ly boxed and not-liable to catch fire. The stuff can be taken green from the log and will not injure the cot -ton. He, will be able to make 200, 000 feet "a day,, andrf urnlsh it at five cents per yard. He .predcits that in a short time everybody who owns a gin will be. able-to "rip' out his own bagging at small cost.; Capt. Peter- icin:is the man after whom the fa mods Peterkin cotton seed, .so well known-in this section,; were named.'' This all sounds very jwell on paper but we do not believe that wood will answer. : If cut out thin, enough to remove tfte objectiaus as to Weight it will be suro to split and go to pieces in splinters In other words, as it appears to us, the wood covering will not bear handling. On the contrary the Acne pine, fibre has been tllQfQUgWy tested in the compress and has stood the test and we believe that this is'the only ma terial that can be made jto antagou ize the jute. In one respect it is even better tlj$n; the jute, because t U to a great extent -impervious to fire. The thin wood., wh en dry would ignite almost as readily as the cotton itself, r ' ' - THa iercliants in Charleston are taking a great deal of interest in the pine fibre bagging. Yesterday's JXew and Courier has a lengthy ar ticle on the ubjectrrepoating what it published someth ing more than two years ago relative tolhe process of. manufacturing pure fibre matting at -the Acme Manufacturing Com- pany Works fcat Cronly.
