Kenan, of Raleigh, was pres ent and was the first speaker to ad dress the meeting. Col. Kenan need ed no introduction to the people of Duplin, for in 1861, when the first gun was fired at Fort Sumter, Col. Kenan, then a mere hoy from col lege, raised a company in this coun ty. This company was called the Duplin Rifles, and a braver com pany a -boys never entered the Confederate service. After Col. Ke nan had finished his speech, then came Mr. A. D.
