Schemes to tax the unmarried have been discussed by French legislators since the great revolution of 1789, with the resulting admission that such taxation would be impotent S a remedy or stimulus to marriage andjoffspring. - An interesting controversy is un der way in lhe English papers as to whether ladies should ride man fashion, it having been hinted that! several well known lady rider eon- j templated Inking a bold step this season m tnat uirfction. lewi, in a long editorial, vumdtMuns the scheme, declaring that the side saddle is a better se.itfor the woman than the cross saddle, safer and more com-, fortable while riding and less dan gerous in case of accident. Among other arguments it advances is the one that the natural roundness of a woman's limb renders her unable to keep a secure seat on a cross saddle. Plump and round-limbed men,' it as sorts, can never be good riders. Mecklenburg Bnncoinbe. Halifax. Martin, Wake. Durham. Duplin. Richmond. Iredell. Rockingham. Caldwell. Mecklenburg Buncombe. There has just been an extraordi nary and unprecedented funeral at Larehmont, on Long Island Sound that of the Rev. Thomas Allen Home, a retired clergyman, who for several years had lived on a small farm there. It was a phonograph funeral, the instrument being .regu lated by a nephew of the deceased. First the hymn: 44 We shall meet on that beautiful shore," was heard in a voice easily repognized ns that of the clergyman's wife, who died only a few months ago. The address that followed Mr. Home had in life de livered to the phonograph, which repeated it. and then came a prayer and the hymn: lThere is a better lainl." In the latter the voices of Mr. Home and his wife were blend ed. Even at the grave the services and the benediction issued from a phonograph in the voice of him who d beautifully arranged it before hand. The effect was weird, to say the least. . "The people of this city," says a ew York correspondent, "will al ways attribute the loss of the Col umbus Fair to 'Me Too' Piatt and Mutt Quay, and just now it looks very much as thoughPlatt had suc ceeded in bringing about what he pretended to be working against a sweeping Democratic victory in 1892 more or less due to the Fair. Two years is a short time in politics a"nd he wires are .already being laid for the campaign of '92. If Piatt is not hoisted by his own petard theu or sooner several miracles will have iaye to be worked meanwhile. The men who have labored honestly and without partisan bias to get the Fair for New York verv gracefullv say they will do everything they can to make it a success in Chicago That is all-right,, but. it is not the temper of the people. The feeling is that an unpardonable slight - has been put upon the metropolis; that her greatness and real importance have been belittled, and that -there is now no hope of having an inter national exhibition worthy thecoun try or the anniversary that is to be celebrated. Time-will modify bitter ness, but the treachery that caused it will not be forgiven." . . Remarkable Itescun Mrs. Michael Curtain, Plainfield, III., makes the statement that she caught cold, which settled on her lungs: she was treated for a month by her family physician, but grew worse. He told her she, was & hope less victim of consumption and that no medicine couldcure her. Her druggist suggested Dr. King's New Discoverv for Consumption; she bought, a bottle and to her delight found herself benefited from first dose. She continued its use and af ter taking ten bottles, found herself sound and well, now does her own housework and is as well as she ever was. Free trial bottles of this Great Discovery atR. R.
