I., is grateful for the open s-inter of 1889-90. He.had a large mortgage about ripe, and was wondering how; he could raise the money, to pay it off, as it could no longer be renewed; 'To thint the bet ter he went into his cellar and. sorted his potatoes, some of them already sprout ing, under, the impression that it vas spring instead of winter. "While cutting out one of these sprouts his knife glanced from a glass like f-ub-stanc. which the good farmer dug out in a leisurely way and put in his pocket without the f flourishes he would- have made had he known it was a diamond. lie found it out later when lie went to Brooklyn onjmsiness. I redisplayed the stone to a. merchant, who at once pro nounced it a diamond of the first water, and offered to go with him to a jeweler's for satisfaction. They went, and the merchant's opinion was corroborated with an offer of $2,000 cash for the jewel. The farmer did not accept the offer, hardly knowing what to do under the circumstances. If he could only know how-the diamond got into the potato he would feel better about it. Not knowing but the rest of the potatoes were equally as rich he went home and picked over the lot, but without further results. It is thought that some burglar hid the diamond in the field and the potato ap propriated it. New York Journal. Metal Hallway Tis. . There "ha3 been recently a lamentable epidemic, so - to speak, of railroad acci dents owing to spreading of rails, result ing in great . loss of life and damage to rolling stock. This series of disasters commenced on Dec. 28, 1889, with the derailment of a fast train on the Chesa peake and Ohio, by which ten persons lost their lives and a great portion of the train was destroyed. Since that date there have been several wrecks of the same nature, involving more fatalities and much injury to person and property. Without reflecting very closely on the matter, the majority of the happy-go-lucky traveling public takes for granted that these spreading rail accidents can hot "be avoided, whereas, in reality, they belong to the category which may fairly be termed "preventable accident." This will be a new light to many, but there is Ho doubt that by the employment of a properly constructed metal tie of steel or iron, and with proper fastenings, spread ing of rails is impossible. Engineering and Mining Journal.' A Uvo 31 an Slowly Petrifying. The medical men of Boston and New York have been puzzling their brain3 over a strange case of ossification or pet rification of a live man by the name of Jonathan Bass. Bass is a man now 60 or Co years of age and lias been gradual ly becoming ossified into one solid mas3 for the past forty -five years. His body is now perfectly rigid, in color and to touch almost exactly like a well sea soned bone, with no more flexibility about it than there is about a stick of wood. "While unable voluntarily to make the least move, Mr. Bass' intellect is keen and Ids digestion unimpaired.- Hun dreds of physicians and scientists, both of this country and of Europe, have ex amined this remarkable freak, all con curring in the opinion that tlw? case of Jonathan Bass beats anything now on record in the medical books. St. Louis Republic. Deer la th Adirondack. For the past month many reports have been made that the deer in the Adiron dack's' are" being hunted down by dogs running wild in the woods. One day recently a force of men who were en gaged in cutting ice on a small lake dis covered stray .dog driving a deer toward them. The dog drove-the deer upon the ice near tliem and then com menced biting it in the hams. The deer bleated most pitifully. The men drove tho dog away, while on.e of them who had a rifle near at hand tried to shoot him, but failed. A guide followed thtr dog's trail, but failed toover take him. The deer came to the men for protection and they patted and soothed it with their hands. Dunns: the night the poor deer died from exhaustion ; . Tlie Wedding Is Postponed. The application of a caveat to stop a marriage is something new. It is stated that a member of the Maryland legisla ture had contracted a marriage with a lady, and journeyed to tho county seat to procure a license when he made the painful discovery that his rival had filed a caveat against the issue, and before he can get a license the case will have to be argued. : The wedding has been post poned. Philadelphia Ledger. TheOldMuiieRook I turn with silent reverence Its unknown pages o'er, The dusty lines inspire a sense Of f oifietl.ing heard before. In days long past in Mher lands; . - Of ancient melodies; Old harpsichords and gentle hands That touched the ivory keys. The book a hundred fancies wears On every yellow page, Soimtas quaint, forgot ten nir. The notes all dim with age. And variations long wove out. And faded songs and old, AVith trills and turnings all about. And graces manifold. Perchance in those old bygone days My lady sat and played In broidered stomacher of maize, And flowered blue brocade. Her lissome fingers dancing ran Through many a fiorid strain, Until Miss Bell behind her fan Begged "that sweet piece again. Perchance, when Summer nights were long And soft winds 'swept the mead ows, Some amorous youth poured out his song To Chloe through the shadows-, Orbeaux with belles of higher state, In some well lit pavilion, Trod graceful through this minuet, Or figured this cotillion. So vagrant fancies through the mind Play fitful now and then, As, with a sigh and smile combined, "I close the book again. 1 dare not touch its music old In this rude modern day; Hallowed by fingers long since cold, And voices passed away.
