The beautiful protective tariff has worked so nicely there that it has worked off a large.number of ts farming popu lation. The fear has been expressed that many , of the farmers will soon be abandoned. The New York JleraUTs Washing ton correspondents-says, i most em phatically, that 'the Federal elec tion bill is dtad beyond hope of re suscitation," and he declares that this reflects the sentiment of three of the Republican jSenatorial lead ers. The correspondent devotes a column of matter ti the subject and gives his reasons n detail for his conclusions. The Tariff bill was to have been taken up to-day and this means a debate of at least six weeks. The River and Harbor, the Sundry Civil and the jndian Appropriation bills will then remain to be acted upon and this will require at least two weeks more. Thus the session will be continued until the middleof September and as a number of Sen atorial terras are to. be 'refilled by legislatures elected this Fan it will be next to Impossible to hold the Senate together any longer. Weekly Weather Crop IJulletin. Thf renorts of correspondents of the Weekly Weather Crop Bulletin, issued by the. North Carolina Ex periment Station and State Weather .. 11.- TTI Service, co-operating wun uie sui ted States Signal Service, show that th pftrlv nart of the week ending last Friday continued to be very warm and dry with an excessive amount of sunshine, until Wednes day night when a very rapid fall in the temperature took place over tlie entire State. The maximum record ed during the week' was 93 degrees; the minimum Friday morning 55 de gree?, which Is lower than has ever been observed here in July since the commencement of observations in 1871. The cool weather will be of too short duration to . injure crops. Drought has prevailed for the past ten days at many places, and garden stuffs, corn and other crops have been injured. Cotton ts still in ex cellent condition and ,t blooming rapidly and. will not. be-tuaterially damaged If the average amount of rain falls'next week.; Curing of to bacco has commenced f q . a tew pinups. The following are important cor rections made during the month of June oni the charts published by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and received by us from Capt. W. H. Mr. A.jP. iiause (Birdie) of this city, is now running on the North Carolina Division of the Richmond and Danville Railroad. We find the following mention of him in Satur day's issue of the Goldsboro Argus: Besides the regular coaches being tilled to their full capacity, the par lar car of the A. & N. C. R. R. on its outward trip to the sea was crowded to .overflowing again yesterday, which speaks well.for the season- at Morehead. It speaks well, also, for the efficiency at his work of Capt. A. P. Gause, the courteous young gentleman in charge of the car, who knows his business and attends to it with a .snap and open courteousness that wins him many passengers and has made him many friends among us. The risrht man in the right place can be truly applied to Capt. Gause. lilaekberriea and Hifrftleberries. Mr. W. J. Massey, in the Horticul turist, publishes a plea for the culti vation of blackberries. lie says: "Where wild blackberries are so fine and so plentiful as tlfeyafeall over North Carolina it is hard ' to get growers to realize thatthere is large profit in cultivating them. The low prices at which the blackberries usually sell lead them to suppose that the cultivated fruits would go in at the same rate. This is a great mistake.. In Baltimore, while the wild berries shipped in buckets are selling f(?r a song, the cultivated ones shipped in quart boxes- and packed in crates bring a better average j price than strawberries, and many growers in Maryland and Delaware consider them more prof itable. The sorts now cultivated huve been selected from wild plants at the North. We have among ns many wild plants which produce very superior fruits. Will the far mers ancj fruit growers co-operate with us in developing a blackberry that willj bring money to their pock ets? If you kuow or find a wild plant with very superior fruit, mark it, and next fall, in .November, send the plant to the N. C. Agricultural Experiment Station at Raleigh. Do this and; aid us in making the Sta tion the source of real profit to far mers, truckers and fruit-growers ' It is really strange that "so little attention has been paid to tbirmat ter heretofore. Both blackberries and huckleberries could, we think, be greatly1 improved by ' cultivation. The big f 'Sampson blues" might be come .pigmies alongside sbmtf of the results of cultivation. There are many who prefer the blackberry and the huckleberry, to the strawberry. If such intelligent fruit growers as Dr. E. Porter, of Rocky Point, and Mr; J. T.j Collins, of Borgaw, were to serioujJ y .undertake the improve ment of those berries we believe that the result-would jn a few lyeari be astonishing. !
