PAGE SIX W?I ' ' * Buy Seeds Now For Fall Cover Crops Raleigh “The successful farm er of the future will be the man who, without neglecting his regular crops, will keep his land busy grow ing legumes and cover crops”, says E. C. Blaii, extension agronomist at State College. “An acre of crimson clover, turned under, will add twenty bushels to the next crop i of corn and those extra bushels will j be peoduced at a cost of twenty j cents each.” According to Mr. Blair, winter, cover crops play an important part in soil improvement and also fur- | nish pasturage and hay for the j farm livestock. Last year one farm in eastern North Carolina produced $528.00 worth of tobacco per acre while another has averaged more than a bale of cotton per acre for several years. Both of these farms have been built up through cover crops recommended by Mr. Blair. Tobacco and cotton crops are handled almost by instinct as the farmers never fail to sow their plant beds, buy cotton seed or fer tilizer in ample time for handling. Cover crops should be as much a part of the regular program as these crops and plans should be | made for buying seed in time for! fall sowing.
