rpjjTTKSPAY, AUGUST 22, 1929. A New Day for Pittsboro New Conditions, a New Spirit, New Enterprises, and A Surprising Degree of Prosperity Despite Several Poor Crops Augur a New Era for the Capital of Chatham County We, the undersigned business houses of Pittsboro, desire to ask the co-operation of the people of Chatham County in making this old town the center of trade for practically the whole county. Times have changed and circumstances have changed. No one has been particularly to blame for the fact that Pittsboro has not kept pace with other towns of the State. The circumstances were against the development of the town. The red hills of this sec tion, with their muddy and slippery roads, made a journey of a few miles with the old time horse and buggy, or wagon, a real task. The main lines of the railroads had left the town isolated. But today things are different. PITTSBORO’S ACCESSIBILITY The S. A. L. branch railroad gives the town as good freight service as if it were a main line. In fact, the line to Moncure is not much more than the switch re quired by many a city factory. Freight from Pittsboro to and from the North is as quick and as cheap as from Sanford, for instance. Few people are riding on trains. Consequently, the railroad disadvantage of old is really no more. On the other hand, the state highways of necessity had to come through the county-seat, and the result is Pittsboro has a highway system radiating to all parts of the county, and putting every man in the county within less than an hour’s drive of the county seat, and the most of you within a half-hour’s drive. COUNTY PRIDE Chatham county and Pittsboro have a history to be proud of. This old town was here and prominent in the affairs of the State when most of the present towns were undreamed of, and it is only since circum stances have aided the new towns to spring into pros perity and prominence that Pittsboro and Chatham county as-a whole have lost part of the prestige of the earlier days. But it may be won back. Pittsboro is rapidly responding to the changed circumstances, and it will be only a short time, apparently, before it will be hardly recognizable as the same old village. NEW ENTERPRISES The establishment and successful operation of the Chatham Mills [silk mill] indicates that Pittsboro W. W. Respectfully, need no longer hesitate to bid for new enterprises. Just at this time, the silk mill is preparing almost to double its capacity. That fact tells the story better ■ than words can. Also new and modern stores are here, and others are to come so soon as the handsome new Fields building is completed. This fact indicates that outsiders have seen a new opportunity in the old town and are hastening to take advantage of it. New residences are springing up on every hand. The school receives pupils from Lee county to Orange. The streets not already paved are as this is written receiving a surface of North Carolina macadam. Bonds have been voted for water works, water sufficient to serve the town till considerable further growth is secured, and only the desire to avoid overburdening the community during the stringent times due to several poor crop years has delayed the instalment. ✓ NEW DAY ADAWNING r Already the new day has dawned. But the quickest est and most effective way to usher in the noon-day glare is to make Pittsboro the commercial center of the county. We have the goods here that the people of the county need, and circumstances favor lower prices than can prevail in the city stores. Thus far the cost of doing business in Pittsboro is much less than in the larger towns. The cost of living is less, and that means that every item of cost, apart from that of the goods, is affected. And the cost of goods is now on a par with that of the larger merchants of the cities. Several stores are members of great chains which buy in quantities at the most favorable prices, and the ad vantages of low cost of goods and of doing business can be, and is, reflected in the prices charged our customers. TO THE PEOPLE’S INTEREST Accordingly, the favor is not altogether on our side when you decide to do your trading in Pittsboro. You favor yourselves. A dollar saved to you is a dollar made. Moreover, every dollar of business saved to the county in the long-run tends to cut your taxes and to build up home markets for your produce. There fore, when we ask you to help us build up Pittsboro, we are asking you to help yourselves. FARRELL’S MARKET AND CAFE CHATHAM HARDWARE CO.
