••SOCIAL NEWS* # Clubs, Parties, Church Activities, Etc. ■ Zone Meeting Held In Wilkesboro Church The fall meeting of Zone Num ber One of the Statesville dis trict held fit the Wilkesboro MethodlBt church Tuesday, Sep tember 30, was largely attehded, and was presided oyer by Mrs. P. C. Smathers, of Lenoir, with Mrs. W. I. Pitts, also of Lenoir, acting as secretary. For the open ing devotions Mrs. Pitts read the scripture and offered the prayer, after which Mrs. Clifton Miller, Wilkesboro, sang "This Is My Task." Words of welcome were spoken by Mrs. J. W. White, president of the hostess society. Roll call showed ten of the seventeen societies in the zone represented along with encour aging reports of their work. Mrs. Ralph Sherrill, of Statesville, dis trict president, made a short talk and^ave the message for Mrs. T. V. Goode, Statesville, the promo tional secretary, who was unable to attend. Mrs. Goode in her message stressed the necessity of the Societies checking goal charts," the beginning of the • fourth quarter, sending reports itW$n time, electing officers at tWw*November meeting and mail ing her the names immediately, I order literature ag early as pos sible and have In bands of all officers by tbe beginning of the new year. She also asked that each Society try to secure three new subscribers to the Metho dist Woman and World Outlook during the fourth quarter. Mra. J. P. Hornbuckle, New ton, led the noonday devotions, which was followed by commun ion In charge of Rev. H. M. Well man, Wllkesboro pastor, being assisted by Rev. J. L. A. Bum garner, Millers Creek. The offer ing, tor starving children over seas, received at this time was $31.12. For the afternoon session, which was opened with prayer by Mrs. Gilbert R. Combs, the district officers present spoke briefly of their work. Mrs. John B. Steele, Hickory, secretary of Missionary education; Mrs. Roy Lazenby, Statesvllle, Supplies; Mrs. Hornbuckle, Spriitual Life chairman, urged the women te use the book, "Great Prayers of the Bible," and to observe the "Week of Prayer";' Mrs. H. A. Poston, Mooresville, literature and publications, said the goal for the Statesville district was thirty Societies with all officers taking the two publications, Methodist Woman and World Outlook; Mrs. Fdd F. Gardner, North Wllkesboro, youth work, stressed the importance of train ing our youth of today for to morrow; Mrs. Lloyd Rash, Le noir, children's work, said the children in the district had jrfv en *242.00 on the $1,200.00 the conference is raising for the Lorena Kelly piano fund. She asked for the fourth quarter that the children send boxes of cann ed goods to the Bethlehem house at Winston-Salem, also coupons; Mrs. Ross Bunch, Statesville, missionary personnel, asked the societies to send their study grant fund at once to Mrs. For est Sharpe, the quota for the dis trict being $600.00, and Mrs. Mack Goforth, of Lenoir, on sta tus of women. During the noon hour a plate lunch was served in the Com munity House by the hostess church. Twenty-one women at tended from the North Wilkes boro society. o The battleship USS Washing ton, flagship of Admiral Lee in the great sea victory in the Sol omons that helped save Guadal canal five years ago, has joined the "Mothball Fleet." Jordan-Jackson Vows Are Solemnized The marriage of Miss Mary Kathleen Jordan and Reginald Pickens Jackson, Jr., was solem nled at 5 p. m. Saturday, Sep tember. 27, at the home of Rev. Dewey L. Temple, Arlington, pastor o f Arlington Baptist church, with the Rev. Temple officiating using the double ring ceremony. The bride wore a salt of brown gabardine with matching acces sories, and an orchid corsage. Her only ornament was a cameo necklace gift of the bridegroom. Mrs. Jackson is the daughter of B. C. Jordan, Roaring Riyer, and the late Minnie Harris Jor dan. She is a graduate of Roar ing Rirer high school and Jones Business College, High Point, and at present holds a position in the office of 8. V. Tomlinson wholesale grocer In North ~W11 kesboro. Mr. Jackson is the son of Mrs. Reginald P. Jackson of Roaring River, formerly of Rock Hill, S. C., and the late Mr. Jackson. He is a veteran of World War II. Having served 2 1-2 years in the i European Theatre. He served In Africa, Sardlna,, Corsica, Italy, England, Germany and France. He received his education ,in the South Carolina schools. (Immediately following the ceremony the couple left for an unannounced wedding trip, and upon their return they will be at home at present at Roaring Riv er. Hardy-Osborne Vows Are Spoken In an impressive service Sat urday, September 20, at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Clate i BTown, Miss Hessie Mae Hardy, daughter of Mr. L. S. Hardy, of Boone, and the late Mrs. Hardy, became the bride of Mr. Broncle Osborne, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Osborne, of North Wilkesboro. Rev. Mr. Brown of ficiated using the double ring ceremony.. The bride wore a dress of blue crepe with black accessories. Her only ornament was a string of pearls, a gift of the groom. The groom, now employed by the Midway Pontiac Company of North Wilkesboro, served for three years as a member of the armed forces in World War U. Alexander-Church Engagement Mr. and Mrs. N. O. Alexander, of Matthews, announce the en gagement of their daughter, Nancy, to John Robert Church, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Church, of North Wilkesboro. The wedding will take place October 25. Mrs. A. H. Casey and j Daughter Fete Miss Jessie Lee Davis Mrs. A. H. Casfiy and her daughter Miss Lucille Casey, en tertained at a dinner party at their home on G Street Tuesday evening as a courtesy to Miss Jessie Lee Davis, of Yadklnville.1 a bride-elect of the month. Miss Davis and William Joseph Bon-1 ey, of Wilmington, will speak i their vows in the Forbush Bap- j tist church near Yadklnville on' the evening of October 11 at j eight o'clock. Miss Casey, who is to be one of the bridesmaids, and Miss Davis were school mates at Meredith College In Raleigh. For the dinner covers were laid for Miss Davis, her mother and Brother, Mrs. Paul Price Da vis and Ms. Bruce Davis, all of Yadkinvllle. Mr. and Mrs. R. T. McNiel, and Mr. and Mrp. C. B.
