Flashers Use
To Wytheville
Three-Game Losing Streak
Set* North Wilkesboro
Back Into Third
North Wilkesboro Flashers,
who were off their usual good
form in the field, dropped a 7 to
6 game here Tuesday night to
the hard hitting Wytheville
Statesmen.
Showing only occasional flash
es of the fielding prowess which
makes the Flashers tops in the
league on the field, North Wil
kesboro completed three fast
double killings but threw the
ball around enough to let in
four Wytheville runs by the er
ror route, which was easily the
margin of victory.
Diminutive Bob Thompson
pitched magnificently in the lat
ter part of the game, but was hit
hard in early innings by the
Wytheville sluggers. But without
the fielding miscues he would
easily have been the winning
pitcher. Pat Pescitelli was the
offensive star with three hits
and two runs batted in, along
with two stolen bases. He was on
base in the seventh with a single
but was trapped between first
and second and called out on a
disputed interference ruling. Mc
Alister led Wytheville batters
with three hits.
Arnold Davis; who started
the game in centerfield, made a
spectacular catch of Levigne's
long drive in the first inning.
Davis leaped into the air to take
the long smash against the cen
terfield fence and fell backward
over the fence with the ball for
the game's first out.
The Flashers committed five
errors afield,, which made it
their worst night in defensive
play in Memorial Park. Three
of the errors were directly ac
countable for Wytheville runs.
Lose 2 to Mt. Airy
Mount Airy Graniteers streng
thened their hold on first place
Monday night by taking a doable
header from North Wilkesboro 4
to 3 and 13 to 3.
In the first game Frank Fazio
had one rough inning, when Mt.
Airy scored, three runs. The
Flashers were one run short of
a tie in the seventh and final
frame.
In the second game North
Wilkesboro jumped on Pete
Treece for two runs in the first
but Mt. Airy came back with
three in the first off walks is
sued by starting pitcher Lee
Bentley, who was relieved by
Ralph Cunningham. Worth Cuth
bertson hurled the final inning.
In the first game Manager
Tom Daddino was put, out of the
game by Umpire Oliver! and
Cuthbertson played first base
during the remainder of the
opener.
