When I asked to see the lonely village where more than 1,000 onetime jungle dwellers are grubbing out of the earth about'half the western world's supply of the precious white metal, I met a blank wall of refusal. At the spotless headquarters of the UMHK, sprawling over acres of well-kept gardens, company officials received me politely. I could visit the large copper smelting works, any cooper mine, native schools, hospitals, houses. No Publicity Wanted But Shinkolobwe — they shrugged The UMHK was not Interested in publicity, i put my ^ to «enior officials. The Shinkolobwe operation had been one of the best-kept secrets of World War II, but the war was over. The top UMHK official spoke sharply: "Here in Elisabethville, we do not discuss uranium. I hired a station wagon and set out. Signs along f* ^ *arned we were on LMHK territory, to quit before we got into trouble. I didn't have to make up my mind to turn back. It was made up for me. Its terraced sides go down about 225 feet and at the bottom great steam shovels grub out the ore. Although uranium had been noted there in 1915, mining began only in 1921—when the Belgians found a way of extracting a few ounces of radium each year out of the uranium ore. Shinkolobwe the source for about threefifths of the world's radium Fabulous Shinkolobwe contains the richest of the world's known uranium deposits. In the bluishblack ore uranium appears as a primary, not a secondary, deposit. The mine is said to produce about 90 varieties of uraniumyielding minerals. Their content of uranium oxide (pitchblende) ranges from 40 to 90 per cent. Among Shinkelobwe's yield, either in association with uranium oxide or free, are gold, palladium and platinum.
