The squad, with teams from a number of other northwestern North Carolina schools, began two weeks practice Monday at Appalachian and will climax the workout with a practice game against Lincolnton on the night of Friday, August 25, at Boone. The Ramblers, who have been one of the state's winngest teams for three years, lost plenty by graduation bnt apparently have plenty left to fill the first line vacancies. One of the graduates was Ray Trlplett, all-state back and one of the state's greatest runners and punters in high school competition. Ray is going to Carolina. Also lost from the backfield were Harold Dancy, Bill fiyrd, Daniel L>inney and Fred Glass. Lost by graduation were some of the best linemen, including Bobby Story, Bobby Eller, Joe Brewer, Bob Kennedy, Bill Pearson, Jack Glass and John Hubbard. But the Ramblers had strong reserves last season and many of these are ready to take over. Twelve letter men returning forir a nucleus for what should prove to be another strong team at Wllkesboro. Tony Emerson, Dean Edwards and Bot Vestal are letter men at end and Carl Swanson is a new end candidate. Shelton Pre* vette, Buddy Mathis and Johnny Phillips are letter men for tackles, with Mack ^Stevens and R. G. Anderson also out for tackle slots. Dale Staley and Bill Jolnes are letter men for guards, with Joe Garwood, T. C. Foster, Buck Cranor and Wade Foster showing promise of much action at that position. Bob Parker is a veteran center and will have help from Joe Gambill. ~ Johnny Garwood is a letter man and experienced quarterback for the T formation, with Junior Groce as understudy. Claude Nichols, fleet halfback; is groomed for Ray Triplett's running and punting duties and Sam TranBou, who transferred from Elkin, shows good running form.
