C. Utilities Commission Wednesday gave the Southern Railway permission to discon tinue its Trains No. 9 and 10 between Asheville and Tryon effective May 1st. The train has been arriving at Tryon each evening and staying until the next morning before making the return trip to Asheville....Jeff Alvin Payatte, Jr., Tryon High School teacher, has been award ed a scholarship by the National Science Foundation. Mr. Pyatte will enter Duke University on June 27 for six weeks of study . . 4 Miss Carla Shuford, a student at Peace Essay and Speaking Contest, are in New York City visiting the U. N. and other points of interest....Miss Carolyn Rhodes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Rhodes of Tryon, was second place winner in the Transylvania Music Scholarship program of the Asheville Music Club, open to W.N.C. musicians. Miss Rhodes is a mezzo soprano The Tryon High School seniors accompanied by Mrs. Ed Beatson and Guynell Smith have returned from their annual Washington trip....The Tryon High School sophomores with their sponsor, Miss Myrtle Baldwin visited Biltmore Mansion and the Asheville Citizen-Times....Miss Marie Al sager, President and Miss Dorothy Wright, Secretary of the League of Women Voters are in attendance at the 24th national convention of the League in St. Louis, Mo. Buys Lot Guy D. and Mary C Anderson of Allison Park, Pa. have bought lot No. 5 in Carpenter Heights in Landrum. The Andersons plan to build next year. Bud Campbell was the broker. Tryon High School, placed fifth in a state-wide essay contest. She wrote on “Jobs for the Handicapped.” The contest was sponsored by the President’s Committee for Employment of the Physically Handicapped.... Frank B. Johnson is at Chapel Hill where he is attending a school for county accountants. The school is sponsored by the N. C. Institute of Government Miss Jaye Lineberger and Miss Pat Smith, winners of the World Girls Track Tuesday Landrum girls in Conference meet Friday Tryon and Polk Central in girls sectionals at A.C.
