The same terrace that controls water runoff and reduces erosion in a field will carry the heavy concentration of water to the edge of the field where, without a proper outlet, serious erosion occurs. To prevent this from happen ing, always provide terraces with good outlets such as a grassed waterway or a vegetated area. A heavily wooded area is suitable for a terrace outlet if the end of the terrace is vegetated just as it enters the woods. Outlets should be installed and vegetated prior to terrace construction to provide a stable, nonerodible outlet and to aid in the establishment of permanent vegetation. Free technical assistance is avilable with terrace design and layout through the Polk Soil and Water Conservation District. Tryon Daily Bulletin, Fri..
