Weather Thursday: high 63,
low 24 Friday morning it was
snowing The ground, trees and
parked cars were accumulating
some snow but fortunately it was
not sticking to the highways
The Bulletin was 53 years old
on January 31st. This is the first
issue of Vol 54. We feel that we
have been of service to the area
during these 53 years and hope to
be even more of a service in the
future We couldn't do it without

Commissioners meet today at 3
p m in the courthouse: the
Saluda City Council meets at 7
p m at the City Hall, the Tryon
School Board meets at 7:30 p.m
in the Supt.'s office at the high
school

memories for Vietnam veterans
who returned from war without
fanfare.

Vosburgh Gets
Two More Awards
Grant Vosburgh of the Fayette
ville Times. Fayetteville won two
more state awards at the N. C.
Newspaper Institute Program
Jan 29 And 30 at VNC-Chapel
Hill. Mr. Vosburgh, a native of
Tryon, won two-third place
awards in the daily newspapers
with 15,000 to 35.000 circulation
One of his articles was titled,
"Blimey: The Pirate Captured
His Dreams'" was in the feature
writing caregory and "The
Greek: Hard Work Helped Him
Beat The Odds" was in the Sports
Feature Writing.
Mr Vosburgh is a graduate of
Tryon High School and UNC-
Chapel Hill He is the son of Mrs
Ed King and Dr George
Vosburgh. both of Tryon.

Bennett of Kenosha, Wisconsin,
have purchased the Fred Wilson
house on Ridge Road It was
formerly the manager's house at
the old Eskdale Farms
After many visits to L'Auberge
and tours around Polk County,
the Bennetts decided to have
their Marshfield Farm for better
weather and an easier life-style
Mr. Bennett was formerly in
advertising in Chicago and Mrs
Bennett is a research chemist at
Abbott Laboratories They both
enjoy the out-of-doors, and
gardening.

Mrs. Gladys Hamrick
Culberson, wife of Paul E
Culberson died Friday morning
in St. Luke's Hospital.
Mrs Culberson came to Polk
County in 1942 as County Home
Agent and five years later after
marriage she was Home
Economics teacher in Tryon In
1951, when Miss Mae Irene
Flentye resigned as Executive
Director of the Polk County Red
Cross. Mrs Culberson was
appointed to take her place Since
resigning from the Red Cross in
1971. she has taken on many civic
responsibilities. She served a two
year term as President of St.
Luke's Hospital Auxiliary and as
chairman of the Hospital
Auxiliary Exchange Shop She
was elected to the Board of St
Luke's Hospital

The annual dinner meeting of
the Tryon Country Club was held
at the Hearthstone Inn on
Tuesday, January 27
Elected to three year terms as
directors were Myron V.
Anthony. George Helmstetter
and Eric G. Larson. They
succeeded Robert B. Creswell.
Robert F Gibbs (1980 President)
and Lawrence H. Pexton, whose
terms expired
Committee reports included
the announcement of the 1980
Golf Event Winners and Runners-
up. with trophies and gift
certificates being awarded
Following the dinner a film,
covered the 1980 Master's
Championship Golf Tournament,
held at Augusta. Georgia.
The 1981 Board of Directors
elected George A Blaine as
President: Myron V Anthony,
Vice-President and Paula Joyce
to the Office of Secretary-
Treasurer.
The Board held its organization
meeting at the Country Club on
Thursday, January 29 President
