Community banquet set for Oct. 20 The Baptist Ministers Conference and Associates voted enthusiastically to endorse and support the Hanes Memorial CME Church as it brings U.S. Congressman Louis Stokes of Ohio to Winston-Salem for a community banquet on Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the M.C. Benton Convention Center. The banquet is designed to challenge the community to vote on Nov. 6. Stokes is the former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Select Committee on Assassinations, which conducted an investigation and study of the deaths of President John F. Kennedy and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Stokes is now an active member and president of the Black Caucus Foundation, chair man of the committee on Standards and Official Conduct and a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Among the organizations Stokes supports are the T^AACP and the Urban League. He is a member of the Prince Hall Masons and the Elks. Numerous civic, religious and ..political leaders are expected to attend. Northeast Ward Alderman Vi| vian Burke will represent Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. at the meeting.
