Page B2 Winston-Salem Chronicle Thursday, October 29, 1987 •JAYVEE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP Spartans hang on to edge Reynolds 14-12 By RANDY PETTITT Chronicle Sports Editor i After four or five cases of the ."big one that got away, Mount l^abor's jayvees finally reeled in a ;king-sized victory last week, as ;they edged city-rival Reynolds, 14- U2, for their win of the season. ■ The Spartans jumped out to an '8-0 lead when tailback Rico Wilson saw daylight from 12 yards out. Delander Thompson added the .extra-point conversion on a running play. The Demons fought back with ;a first-half score, but their extra- Jx)int attempt failed, leaving an 8-6 score at the half. • In the third quarter, Thompson Scored from 12 yards out and pro vided the Spartans with enough to 'hold off the Demons. Reynolds scored late in the third quarter and nearly pulled off a successful rally with seconds left in the game, but an inadvertent whistle from one of the game officials halt ed the play at the five-yard line. The Demons couldn't score from four tries at the five, and Mount Tabor got it's first victory of the '87 season. Smith J.V.'s 14, North 12 Tony Whitlock's last-second Tield goal fell just inches short, as 'Greensboro Smith used a safety and Two touchdowns to get by the top- iranked Vikings last week at North ;Forsyth Stadium. The Vikings got a 6-0 lead when DeShannon Napper capped a 35-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Still in the first quarter, the Vikes drove 70 yards and took a 12- 0 lead when Napper scored again on a short run. Smith rallied for a long drive in the second quarter and trailed 12-6 at the half. The Eagles then got a safety on the opening kickoff of the second half when a Viking return man erroneously stepped back into the end zone from the three-yard line. A long pass play gave the Eagles a 14-12 lead late in the third quarter, but North rallied with just seconds left in the game. On fourth and long, the Vikings' Tony Whitlock lined up to kick a 38-yard field goal, but a pro cedure penalty pushed them back five yards - forcing a kick of 43 yards. Whitlock's kick was on line but fell just inched short of the crossbar, and the top-ranked Vikings msted defeat for the first time this year. "It was a tough way to lose," said Coach Gene Bowles of his Vikings' defeat. "The procedure penalty and the safety really came back to haunt us." Parkland J.V.'s 16, South Rowan 8 Parkland made some pre-game changes and managed to pull off a 16-8 win thanks to two big plays. The Mustangs got the opening kickoff and drove downfield to take an 8-0 lead on Anthony Brown's eight-yard run. Quarterback Mike Kinzer added the two-point conver sion on an option run. Lamont "Jukie" Ferguson gave the Mustangs the lead for good when he bounced off a Red Raider lineman and went 45 yards untouched for the score. Ferguson added the two points for the 16-8 margin. "Tm glad we bounced back after last week," said Coach Kent Edwards of his Mustang jayvees. "I'm proud of them. They did n't quit after losing to West and this was a big win for us." GB Page J.V.'s 56, Glenn 0 A rash of injuries and promo tions to the varsity level took it's toll on the Bobcat jayvees last week against the Pirates. They'll try to bounce back this week by hosting top-ranked North Forsyth this Thursday night.
