Thursday, October 29,1987 Winston-Salem Chronicle PageB3 jayvee football Carter, Jones help Carver sting East 30-6 By RANDY PETTITT Chronicle Sports Editor They don't grow them big over at Carver these days - but tough perhaps - as the third-ranked Yel- lowjacket jayvees crushed East Forsyth 30-6 last Thursday night at Carver Stadium. The Jackets, led by pair of touchdowns from Mark Jones and solid running from Steve Carter, found themselves behind almost as soon as the game started. East's Terry Andrews took the game's opening kickoff and raced jownfield for a 74-yard touchdown and a 6-0 East lead with only six seconds ucked off the clock. But the touchdown return only fired up the feisty Yellowjackets, as Carver returned the favor with a 52- yard touchdown drive that culmi nated when Steve Carter scored from the three-yard line. After Carver's defense held East to five plays, Mark Jones took a first down handoff at the 48-yard line and ran off tackle 52 yards for his first touchdown of the night and a 12-6 halftime lead for the Jackets. Derrick Hauser helped apply more pressure, as he took advan tage of an East turnover and scored on an impressive 48-yard run. Another East turnover - their third fumble of the game - gave Carver yet another crack at the end zone. Set up by a 26-yard run from Jones, George Cherry put the Jack ets ahead 24-6 with a six-yard touchdown. Steve Carter set up Carver's final score late in the fourth quar ter, as he eluded three Eagles and ran down the left sideline for a 43- yard pickup. Jones bagged his sec ond score on the next play from the four-yard line for the 30-6 final margin. Carver Coach Mike Styers said he wasn't surprised that his team won - but was shocked at the score. "1 thought that it would be one of those 12-6 deals," he said. "Really, 1 was amazed at our offense. All of our backs ran super and our line was blocking pretty nicely." East Coach John Pegram said his team simply didn't show up. "This was by far our worst game," Pegram admitted. "You have to give credit to Carver, though. They're at their peak right now and they have a good football team. 1 was amazed at their quickness. "They really made us look bad." Styers said he thinks his defense is one of the best around. "I believe we can stack up with anyone on defense," he said. "Looking at the film, you can see that our defense just took East completely out of the game. Then our backs were rotating and tired them out. "I'm really proud of our kids. c 19B7R.J. JAYVEE FOOTBALL iloud's two ID'S help itans stomp Davie 22-0 By RANDY PETTITT Chronicle Sports Editor CLEMMONS - West Forsyth continued it's reign as the city's best defensive jayvee football team and shutout Davie County 22-0 last Thursday at West Stadium. The Titans, ranked second in Ihe city according to the Chronicle, fumbled their first possession of the game when Haywood Cloud was hit near the 15-yard line by Davie's Lee Linville. But the Titan defense held the War Eagles to just six plays and took over again at the 34-yard line following a punt. Davie showed some defensive muscle as well, holding the Titans on a key pass on fourth and 11 at the 31-yard line. Three plays later, the Titans recovered a War Eagle fumble and finally got on the scoreboard. A pair of power sweeps from Cloud put West on the Davie 13- yard line. Sam Morgan then sprung Cloud on a trap block and the big tailback rambled down to the one before finally being shoved out of bounds by Davie's Kevin Gilbert. Cloud dove over the goal line at the one-yard line and Marion Hawkins added the two-point con version on a reverse for an 8-0 lead. West threatened again late in the second quarter, but Brett Noe fumbled after catching a pass at the 41-yard line. Cloud opened the third quarter with a bang, as he took a sweep to the left and rambled down to the 13-yard line. A play later, Sam Morgan took it in from the 10-yard They are finally figuring out the team concept in football and that's why it's coming together for us. 'We have to move the foot ball," Styers said. "That will make or break us. I think we can play good defense and keep it close, but we have to put some points on the board. "If we play like we did against East - then I couldn't complain about a thing." AT LAST ... A Nile Out For The ENTIRE FAMILY! parkway lanes PARKWAY PUIZA SHOPPING CENTER P.O. BOX 6224 WINSTON-SALEM. The Titans, who were merely trying to run out the clock in the fourth quarter, got their last touch down when Cloud was sprung free on a Shane Moss block. Cloud took advantage of the hole and made two open-field cuts for a 36- yard score. Wayne Patterson added the two-point conversion for the 22-0 final. Coach Tom Henson said it was another fine effort from his offen sive line that keyed the win. "Our offensive line has played super the last couple of games," he said. "They've played well all year, but the last two games have been really something. "And what can you say about Haywood Cloud. He's a good kid and fine runner. That last touch down run was like something you see in college ball." The Titans' defense had it's second straight shutout. They have allowed their opponents 28 points in nine games - an average of only three points a game. A final game matchup with Mount Tabor has Henson and his Titans wanting a city champi onship. 'We'd like to finish 8-2," he said. "Mount Tabor beat us on a rainy night two years ago and we're not taking them lightly." \\fest travels to Paisley Middle School for a Thursday afternoon game at 3:30 p.m. THE REFRESHEST
