Chuck Davis African-American Dance Ensemble to present benefit concert at UNC-Greensboro GREENSBORO - The Chuck Davis African-American Dance Ensemble wilt perform a benefit dance concert at the Uni versity of North Carolina at Greensboro on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 3:15 p.m. in the Dunce Theater on Walker Avenue. A minimum donation of $5 is being requested for admission. All proceeds will be donated to the Melanie Fcinstein Scholarship Fund which will provide tuition scholarships for outstanding minority dance students. Melanie Fcinstein received her B.V.A. in dance from UNCG in 1985 and was working toward certification for tcachin^dance in public schools at the time of her death in 1988. As a student, she strongly believed that dance could play a role in developing youth with no other outlets for self expression. She also was commit ted to making dance education more accessible to minorities. The Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble, founded in 1983, specializes in music and dances originating from West African culture. Davis, artistic director of the Ensemble, has a strong commitment to pre serving the dance and music of xhe Black African tradition. He travels ?to Africa annually in order to renew the ensemble s repertoire. Prior4o the African-American Dance Ensemble, in 1968, Davis founded the Chuck Davis Dance Company in New York City. They gradually became one of ihe nation's premiere Afro-American dance companies. The troupe vis ited Durham in 1980 to establish their headquarters and merged with other danccrs to bccomc the African-American Dance Compa ny in 1983. The Ensemble is dedicated to positive social change and ihcy arc widely known for their picccs such as "War of ihc Guardians," "Saturday Night. Sunday Morn ing" and "Drought," a piccc dedi cated to the people of Ethiopia who are* suffering from natural and political calamity. The concert will also include dance works by UNCG faculty artists. John Gamble will present "Dry Run Through West Texas," Jan Van Dyke will present "Spike," and Alain Charron will present "Traum." "The company has given us a lot of support." Mr. Watson agreed. "The management here has i shown a spccial interest in making sure we know that they're support ing us," he said. "They have pro vided resources and been very supportive so that we could do a lot of the things we're doing." Mr. Graham said that the aTTTance is very interested in working with young people to help prepare them to be successful members of the community. The alliance's current project is the sponsorship of two scholar ships to help further the education Of two hj,gh school seniors. The scholarships are open to all stu dents, and Mr. Graham said that minority students arc especially encouraged to apply. j Our organization feels that our youth arc our most important resource," said Mr. Graham.
