Reynolds vice president to lecture on The Black Male Crisis' hronicle Staff Report In conjunction with Nation ablic Radio's "Class of 2000: he Prejudice Puzzle," WUNC adio will kick off its fall lecture ■es on Sept. 13 at North Caroli- ^Central University with noted jeaker Benjamin Ruffin, vice resident of corporate affairs for Reynolds Tobacco Company, division of R.J.R.-Nabisco. The free lecture will be held t 7:30 p.m. in the B.N. Duke auditorium at 1801 Fayetteville :oad in Durham. Ruffin is a graduate of North Jarolina Central University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was the special assistant to former North Carolina Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. and is nationally known for his ability as an orator and expert on African American issues. "The Class of 2000: The Prejudice Puzzle" is an NPR week-long programming and out reach focus on the lives and biases of young people, and how they deal with stereotyping. "Class of 2000: The Preju dice Puzzle," the first presentation of NPR's Specials Project, is fund ed by a grant from the Corpora tion for Public Broadcasting. The project includes both concentrated reporting time and talent on a sin gle issue and a major national out reach initiative to involve public radio stations in community efforts to address the issue. Throughout the week of Sept. 9-15, more than a dozen five- to 20-minute NPR features will air on "Morning Edition" (Mon.-Fri., 6-9 a.m.), "All Things Consid ered" (Mon.-Fri., 5-6:30 p.m.), and "Weekend Edition" (Sat., 8-10 a.m.). Broadcasts of these pro grams can be heard locally on WFDD Public Radio (88.5 FM). Together, the "Prejudice Puz zle" reports present the voices of a cross section of America's young seldom heard in the media: blacks, whites, Hispanics, chil dren of multiracial families, teenagers in the Alaskan bush. Native Americans at a powwow, Amerasian children looking for acceptance, gay and straight friends talking about sexual iden tity, teenagers in jail. Ruffin's WUNC lecture will focus on one of the most passion ate issues in the African-Ameri can community, "The Black Male Crisis." This lecture will be co-spon sored by North Carolina Central University and supported by the local chapters of the Youth and College Division of the NAACP. The WUNC Radio and NCCU hope to provide a lecture that will generate thoughtful and compelling discussion of a prob lem that — far from being con fined to the African-American community - affects the future social and economic development of the nation. WUNC Radio and NCCU hope to draw more public aware ness to the problem through the Ruffin lecture. For more information on the Sept. 13 lecture, contact Jeanne Phillips or Lee Hansley at WUNC at (919) 966-5454. According to comments she made at her swearing-in ceremony, it was this desire to serve that led Duncan to her profession. When she was still a child, Duncan's par ents took her to see a play at North Carolina College (as North Carolina Central University was then named). The play, which dealt with the inequitable treatment suffered by an African-American man at the hands of the legal system, so moved Duncan that she kept asking the adults around her, "Why?" The inability of those adults to answer this question made a profound impression. "Then and there, I decided to become a lawyer. A Please see page A12 Allyson K.
