Business Siecor Corporation to Build New Plant Siecor Corporation, the world's leading manufacturer of fiber optic cables for land-based applications, will construct a new state-of-the-art fiber optic cable manufacturing plant in the Centre 311 Industrial Park in Winston-Salem, announced Joseph D. Hicks, company presi dent and chief executive officer. According to Hicks, "the Cen tre 3 1 1 location was chosen based on a number of criteria which include the availability of a quality uork force, the availability of pub lic services, enough space for sig nificant expansion, access to inter state highways, and the excellent quality of life in the Triad area." Hicks also commended representa tives of the North Carolina Depart ment of Commerce and Winston Salem Business Inc. who worked together to develop comprehensive incentive package and coordinated with the city of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County and Duke Power to provide valuable assistance to Siecor in the evaluation of the Cen tre 311 site. "Siecor's decision to open a facilit> in Winston-Salem is great news for the city, the Triad, and the entire state because it will mean new high-tech, high-wage jobs for our citizens," said Gov. Jim Hunt. Construction of the new 215,000-square-foot facility will begin immediately, and manufac turing operations are expected to be underway by mid- 1994. The plant initially w ill add approximately 200 new jobs, to include professional, technical and semi skilled positions, in Forsyth County. RS&H Archi tects. Engineers <&. Womble Attends Washington Meeting Alderman Larry Womble of the Southeast Ward was in Washington recently to attend the first major meeting for municipal government leaders to take stock of President Clinton's national economic pro gram and to plan a strategy to make it work in America's cities and towns. More than 3,000 local govern ment officials took part in the National League of Cities' annual Congressional-City Conference, which took place as Congress was preparing to take up the President's initiatives. President Clinton personally brought his blueprint for change to the meeting, and in a speech to the delegates on March 8 said the suc cess of his plan depended upon everyone taking responsibility for building a stronger America. NLC President Donald M. Fraser. mayor of Minneapolis, told the delegates that breaking the polit ical gridlock in Washington and launching a rigorous and sustained effort to strengthen the nation's eco nomic future required grassroots - support as well as presidential lead ership. "The president's goals are our goals also, and we intend to make this plan for economic growth and the deficit reduction succeed" Fras er said Other national policy leaders speaking at the meeting included Ron Brown, secretary of the Department of Commerce, Henry CisneTos7~secretary of The Depart- ~~ ment of Housing and Urban Devel opment. Pepsi Comes to Winston uov. Jim Hunt announced recently that Pepsi-Cola Company will locate its new Customer Ser vice Center in Winston-Salem, bringing 200 jobs to the area in the next year. Pepsi-Cola will house its cus tomer billing services, accounts receivable, telephone sale operations and information system operations and support in the 400 .000- square - foot World Headquarters Building of R J. Reynolds Industries. Pepsi will start renovating the building, which was donated by RJR to Wake Forest University m 1987, this month. You don't want to miss a tax benefit that you are entitled to, particularly if it will provide ft^ratter refund to you. ? If you made estimated tax payments during the year, have you made the correct entry for your payments on your Form 1040 or 1040 A? ?. v f Are all Forms W-2, "Wage and Tax Statement," and supplemental tut forms and schedules attached? Did you sign and date the return? If you are married and filing a joint return, did your spouse also sign and date the return? rC' ? Did you use the peel-off label and pre-addressed envelope? If the label is not correct, carefully make the proper changes on the label. ? Did you make yourself a copy of the Federal and state income tax returns for your records? If you are unable to file your income tax return by the April 15 deadline, file for an extension. However, to make the filing extension valid, you must have paid by the due date, April 1 5, at least 90 percent of your total tax liability for the year for which you are trying to obtain the filing extension. If you don't include 90 percent of the income taxes due with the extension form, your income tax return will be considered a late-filed return. As a result of late filing, penalty will be assessed, as well as inter est on the late payment Therefore, it is important that you make a good estimate of how much you will owe and include that amount with the extension form that you will mail to the IRS. You should not be con cerned about overpaying your taxes; the IRS will give refund the over payment if your estimate is high. University President Tom Hearn. Winston-Salem and Forsyth County will each contribute funds to the Pepsi-Cola project. Although the state offered no finan cial incentives, it will provide spe cialized training for Pepsi employ ees at the local community college. In addition, Hunt personally lobbied Pepsi-Cola executives and met with top officials in the Governor's Office to facilitate the deal. "North Carolina has a great deal to offer Pepsi." said Janice Montle. senior vice president for business strategy and transformation and chief financial officer at Pepsi. "Given our 100-year legacy in the state, we're especially proud to establish such a significant presence here. "The quality of life and work force, the unparalleled resources of Wake Forest University, and the unflagging efforts of Gov. Hunt and Secretary Phillips made this site overwhelmingly appealing." she said.
