Religion Felder to Speak at Winston-Salem State University One of the nation's foremost biblical scholars will be the guest speaker at Winston-Salem State University's final, program on reli gion and rfthics^t 10 a.m. on April 23 in the AlBert H. Anderson Cen ter. Cain Hope Felder. the author of the ground-breaking stucly. Trou bling Biblical Waters . Race. Class and Family . is professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Howard University's School of Divinity, where he is editor of The Journal of Religious Thought. Felder is also the founder and chairman of the Biblical Institute for Social Change in Washington. He is one of nearly 30 African Americans with a doctorate in theol ogy and pan of a new movement by black Bible scholars who advocate a theological interpretation of biblical scholarship that puts into perspec tive the African presence in the Bible. As the editor of the 1991 book. Stony the Road H> Trod: African American Biblical Interpretation. Felder presents the writings of 1 1 African-American contributors who ascribe to an African-centered approach to understanding biblical history. Felder served on the faculty of Princeton Theology Seminary for three years before joining Howard University in 1981. An ordained elder, he was pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Nevs York from 1975 to 1977. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Felder was national director of the United^Methodists' Black Caucus in Atlanta. Felder holds a bachelor s degree in ph ilosophy and classics from Howard; a master's of divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York; a diploma in theology from Oxford University. Mansfield College, in England; a master's of philosophy and a doctorate in bibli cal language and literature from Columbia University. He has trav eled widely and has written many articles in scholarly periodicals. He has a reading knowledge of eight foreign languages. After eight years of research, his book. Troubling Biblical Water: Race. Class and Family , was pub lished by Orbis Books in April 1989 and immediately gained recognition as a landmark and ground-breaking study. Stony the Road We Trod: African American Biblical Interpre tation , published by Fortress Press in spring 1991, is in its record breaking fourth printing.
