Community African-American Gospel Sing-Out To Be Held at Dixie Classic Fair ? ? -fi *&$*?*% flST' A - ll A Event attempts to lure more blacks with gospel contest By DAVID L. DILLARD Chronicle Suff Writer The Winston-Salem Chronicle and Dixie Gassic Fair will host the inaugural Winston-Salem Chronicle Gospel Contest on the fairgrounds Oct. 4-7. The contest is open to all Forsyth County choirs, individuals, quartets and groups who perform traditional African-American gospel, according to A1 Martin, chairman of the gospel contest com mittee. "We're trying to get more black people over 40 to attend the fair, so we want only down-home gospel instead of contemporary," Martin said. This project is the first time the Dixie Classic Fair and a black business have worked together to help all races participate in fair events. "We wanted to include more African Americans over 40 in the fair events so we looked at sev eral possibilities, and we were very excited about (the gospel contest)," fair director Bill Austin said. "We plan to continue this as an annual event." . The competition will be open to all non-professional choirs, quartets, individuals and groups based in Forsyth County. A written application must be submitted along with a demonstration cassette tape by Aug. 2. Cash prizes of $300 and $200 will be awarded to the first and second-place winners in each category. Applications can be picked up at the Winston-Salem Chronicle, 671 N.
