Lakers Win Game Against Boo Williams in AAU Tournament

in the opening game of the AAU
national basketball tournament the
Laken bounced back and won their
second game, defeating Pro-Kings
71-47 and reviving hopes for a
- chance in the winners' bracket
That's just what happened when
the Laken defeated Milwaukee 78
53. Dameon Foster led the Laken,
scoring 17 points. Foster is a point
guard from North Forsyth High
School, who ruled the floor by hit
ting his talented 3-pointers four
times during the game.
At the end of the first quarter
the Laken held a 14-0 lead, and by
half-time the Laken ruled 43-25.
Although Milwaukee tough
ened up, they still fell short by a
wide margin at the end of the third
quarter with a score of 60-38.
Then the Laken got a little over
confident, giving Milwaukee a
chance to control the floor. It didn't
take much for the Laken to realize
that Milwaukee was beginning to
rattle their cage and got their act
together for a winning score of 78
53.
Scoring points for the Laken
were: Foster, 17; Skinner, 10;
Attacks, 4; Butler, 5; Henighan, 3;
Caldwell, 5; Qrowell, 5; Pittman, 9;
Scott, 2; Johnson, 4; Brown, 6; and
Floyd, 8.
In the championship play
against Memphis,. the Lakers fell
short their destiny of another cham
pionship.
This loss knocked the Lakers
out of the championship, putting
them into the consolation bracket
" Memphis came out playing
strong/ said Coach William Butler.
"They were focused, and the Lakers
weren't."
. Scoring points for the Lakers
were: Foster, 8; Skinner, 4; Attucks,
5; Butler, 4; Henighan, 6; Caldwell,
4; Crowell, 2; Pittman, 6; Scott, 6;
and Johnson, 15.
In the consolation game, the
Winston Lake Lakers took the win
over Boo Williams with a score of
76-69.
The Lakers held a seven-point
lead in the first quarter of 17-10 and
advanced to a 13-point lead by half
time.
In the third quarter Boo
Williams out-scored the Lakers by
seven points, narrowing the margin
by six points.
In the final quarter of the game
it was heel-to-toe action with the
Lakers hitting 23 points and Boo
Williams 22, but it was enough to
give the Lakers the victory by seven
points.
Scoring points for the Lakers
were: Foster, 10; Skinner, 4; Butler,
ll; Henighen, 12; Crowell, 3;
Pittman, 9; Johnson, 20; Brown, 2;
Scott, 2; and Floyd, 3.

Bell All-Stars Defeat Sims Hitmen
The Rupert Bell Recreation Center baseball team
defeated the William C. Sims Recreation Center's 13- to
16-year-okls with a blow-out score of 13-1 on July 21 at
the Civitan Park baseball field.
The coaches were Ben Piggott for the Sims Center
and Robert Minor for Rupert Bell.
Sims' 16- to 18-year-old basketball team defeated
Sprague by one point, with two missed free throws by
Terry Williams of Sprague.
Sam Brown and Baron Debose were the leading
scorers for the game.
The Sims Center announced that the Boy's Club
and Sims Center 6- to 10-year-old basketball league is
coming to the Sims gym Fridays at 2:30 pan. The Boy's
Club and Sims Center T-ball League is on Tuesdays at
9:30 a.m. at the Happy W Gardens baseball field.
Any child interested in playing should call Ben
Piggott at the Sims Center at 727-2837 or Ron
Bethums at the Boy's Club at 727-8076.
Dunking Contests Held at Hosiery

The seventh annual "Hang the
Net" and "Slam Dunk Contest" held
lest week at Hanes Hosiery gym
filled the walls beyond belief with
not only kids but adults. Over 600
people watched this super event.
The event was originated by
Ait Blevins, director of the hosiery.?
seven years ago when he was at
South Fork Gym, with the idea of a
"shootout" in which the objective is
to make the shot, but to also strip
the net and make it hang on the rim.
The "Hang The Net" contest is one
of the Winston Salem recreation
department's hottest special events
ever.
According to Blevins, he staits
planning each year five to six
months in advance, by calling spon
sors, writing letters and getting
information out to the public.
According to Blevins, "With
the help of great friends and spon
sors like Jamie Wilkes Trophies,
The Screen Scene, Arby's, McDon
alds, The Finish Linfe, 102 Jams,
Rock-ola Cafe, co- workers and the
city recreation department staff, the
event has grown to be a huge suc
cess and one that the kids love."
This year the kids were treated
to the "Former College Star
Shootout" which included Blevins'
childhood hero, Charlie Davis, a
former Wake Forest Ail-American
and ACC Player of the Year. Other
former college stand-outs included
former Johnson C. Smith and All
CIA A player, Vincent "Fish"
Brown, who hit 9 of 10 and wses this
year'* winner.
Also attending was Winston
Salem State's Monty Gray; former
High Point College's Brian Leak;
Ed Crosby of Florida Jr. College;
Louis Lowery who played at J. C.
Smith; and Michael "Popbottle"
Thomas, a professional player in
Europe.

runner-up, Darrius White, in the
