Deaths and Funerals Russell's Funeral Home 822 Carl Russell Ave. 722-3459 ASHFORD Gilbert Roland Ashford of 902 Gray Avenue died July 22 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. He was a native of Forsyth County. He was born Feb. 6, 1943 to Willie Ashford Sr. and the late Lucy Butler Ashford. He attended the local public schools and was a graduate of Atkins High School. He was a former employee of Thomasville Furniture Co. Ashford is survived by his father, Willie Fleming Ashford Sr. of the home; a daughter, Tracy Elaine Carter of Indianapo lis, Ind.; a sister, Rhonda (Willie) Jackson of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Willie (Ola) Ashford Jr. of Winston-Salem and Alvis (Robin) Ashford of Hyattsville, Md.; five aunts, Estella Martin and Margaret Green of Troy, Mattie Mae Ashford and Verna Mae Henderson of Winston-Salem, and Cumella Wilkins of Waukegan, III; two uncles, John Henry Ashford of Winston-Salem and Langley Tucker of Washington, D.C.; four nieces, Tanisha Ashford and LaToya Ashford of Hyattsville, Md. and ATCea Jackson and Tonya (Jay) Davidson of Win ston-Salem; four nephews, Willie Ashford III, Kendra Jack son, Eugene (Lori) Lyde and Rodney Ashford, all of Winston Salem; a very special and devoted friend, Jean Wood; plus many other relatives and friends. Services were held July 27 at Gospel Tabernacle Holiness Church, with the Rev. James Moses officiating. Burial followed in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Russell Funeral Directors handled arrangements. DAVIS Master Tyrece Earl Davis, 19 months old, of 1317 Belews Sl died July 23 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. "He was born Dec. 3, 1991 to Syehilver Davis and Joe LaGuard in Forysth County. He attended ML Olive Baptist Church. Davis is survived by his mother and step-father, Syehilver Davis and James D. Dervin, both of Winston-?alem; his father, Joe LaGuard of Winston-Salem; his grandparents, Earl and Devora Davis of the home; great-grandparents, Willie and Martha Weaks of Winston-Salem; plus many other relatives and friends. Services were held July 27 at Mt Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Gray officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Directors handled arrangements. DOUGLAS The Rev. George Perry Douglas Jr. of 3006 Carr Court died July 20 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Guilford County. He was bom Oct. 8, 1929 to the late Willie Mae Whitehead Douglas and the late George Perry Douglas Sr. He had lived in Winston-Salem all his life. He was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth Coun ty Schools. He was an associate minister of Solid Rock Baptist church and was a retired employee of RJ. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Factory No. 64. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of Mt Moriah Lodge No. 168, Scottish Rites Masons. Douglas is survived by his devoted wife, Marguerite R. Douglas of the home; three daughters, Geraldine P. Lewis, Cassandra V. Douglas and Vanessa (Reuben) Bratton, all of Winston-Salem; two loving granddaughters, Marguerite and LaKisha Bration, both of Winston-Salem; one sister, Dorothy (Bishop Frederick) Patterson of Winston-Salem; one brother, Theodore (Loretta) Douglas of Black Mountain; a very special godchild, DeJuara Hairston of Winston-Salem; one aunt, Lula Henderson of Salisbury; a sister-in-law, Gemine Rice of Win ston* Salem; many nieces and nephews; plus many other rela tives and friends. Services were held July 24 at Solid Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles W. Leake officiating. Burial followed in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Russell Funeral Directors handled arrangements. GILLIAM Vance "Dirk" Alfonso Gilliam of 222 Motor Road died July 22 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Winston-Salem. He was-born Nov. 19, 1930 to the late Mildred Gilliam and the late Hollins Dover. He was a life-long resident of Forsyth County and a member of St James A.M.E. Church. He was a graduate of Carver High School and a retired employee of R J. Reynolds Tobac co Co., Brook Cove facility. He was a senior attendant for Russell Funeral Home and the manager and co-owner of the Big Apple Social Club. Gilliam is survived by two sons, Michael (Melanie) Gilliam of Varna Gilliam Walkertown and Vance (Bobbi etta) Gilliam of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Karen Ft. Myers, Fla. and Constance (Phillip) Hayes of Charlotte; two sisters, Carlotta Dover (Anthony) Hamilton of Los Banos, Calif, and Margaret Gilliam of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Leonard Dover of Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren; one great grandchild; his former spouse, Clarene G. Stewart of Winston Salem; the Russell family, the Russell Funeral Home staff; many aunts, uncles and cousins; plus many other relatives and friends. Services were held July 26 at St. James A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. Carrington Carter officiating. Pastor Orville L. llgner delivered the eulogy. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.. Russell Funeral Directors handled arrangements. WRIGHT Etheridge Clinton Wright of 619 Gill St. died July 22 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. He Was a native of Forsyth County. He was born Jar^. 6, 1922 to the late Rev. Henry and Levista Wright. He attended St. Stephens Baptist Church and was a self-employed carpen try contractor. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served in World War II and the Korean War. Wright is survived by his wife, Delreo D. Wright of the home; his step-daughters, Gilda C. (John) Mocfc and Delores Carter, both of Winston-Salem; three step-grandchildren; a devoted niece, Janice Ennle~of "Winston-Salem; plus many other relatives and friends. , _ . He was a native of York County, S.C. He was a retired employee of Douglas Battery Co. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Jamison is survived by his wife, Elma Jamison of the home; one sister, Liller Mae McCoy of Rockhill, S.C.; plus many other relatives and friends. CWade") Lane of 111 Capistrano Drive died July 18 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Forsyth County and a retired employee of RJ. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Whitaker Park division. PHELPS Margaret Mammie Carolina Hash Phelps of 3044 Gilmer Ave. died July 29 at her home. She was a native of Carroll County, Woodlawn, Va. but had lived in Winston-Salem for SO years. She was a former employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Carroll County, Va.
