'ITic team set school records for field
goal percentage (.462), free throw percent
age (6.55). as well as setting a new season
mark for three-pointers (91) .
Individually, sophomore point guard
Lisa Rice and senior Jcnnine Tanks were
named to the Kodak All-America Honor
able Mention team for their great seasons.
Rice set school and conference
records for assists in one game (I1)) and
one season (305).
Tanks moved into first place all-time
in school and conference history with 439
steals. She was also named to the CI A A
All-Tournament team, where she was
MVP for the second year. She is the fourth
woman in school history to be named to
the All-Tournament team three years in a
row.
In the championship final, a thrilling
two-hour set with St. Augustine's, Rice hit
five free throws in the final 90 seconds to
seal a 78-77 win.
Strike three? No way.
Yes, in the basketball-crazy world of
the CIAA, they play baseball, too. And
this season, Norfolk State played it best.
The Spartans rolled to a 24-13 record
and finished one of the most successful
sports seasons in school history by win
ning the CIAA championship.
It was Norfolk State's seventh
straight.
The Spartans had some help, though.
Norfolk State hosted the CIAA cham
pionship and also played from the No. 1
sccd, thanks to their 12-3 CIAA record.
In the championship final, the Spar
tans had an easy time of things ? this was
a familiar theme for Norfolk, at least
against CIAA opponents ? beating Bowie
State 13-2.
And for Norfolk coach Marty Miller,
it was his 16th CIAA conference title in 21
years at Norfolk State.
Amazing?
Uh-huh.
Was Norfolk's sports year amazing?
Uh-huh.
