(L to R)Patricia Cromwell , Coach Drew Buie, Germane Cromwell, Napoleon Cromwell Jr. North Forsyth Player Receives Award Germane Crowell, a senior wide receiver for North Forsyth was honored last week with a pre sentation of a plaque commemorat ing his selection as one of the play ers on the 1993 Reebok PreSeason All-American High School Foot - ball team, selected by Scholastic Coach. This is the first ever Reebok PreSeason team and only 100 play ers were seleced nationwide. Crowell joins some select company as the only other player chosen from North Carolina was Maurice Staley of West Charlotte. Crowell, at 6-3, 185 pounds, ilso plays basketball for the bikings team, averaging 13 points ind 10 rebounds as a junior. For football coach Drew Buie, n his second season at the helm of forth Forsyth, "It was a honor to tave coached this young man," he aid. * Buie, a Catawba graduate, vent on to play professional foot tall for the Raiders and Bengals as . wide receiver, making Crowell's election an additional honor. Crowell started (Mt\hiyfQ(H-f >all career in Pop Warner footbaU^ ?ie was an All Metro Conference , defensive back as a sophomore. His junior year Buie switched him to wide receiver as well, and Crowell caught 40 passes for near ly 700 yards and was named to both the All Northwest and Metro teams. As a major in business and accounting^Crowell's interests include video games in addition to athletics. He is being pursued by numer ous major colleges, including Notre Dame, Virginia, Ohio State, South Cal, Clemson, N.C. A&T, Florida, Wake Forest, Maryland, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Okla homa, Penn State, Tennessee, Michigan, N.C. State, North Car olina, Stanford, SE Louisiana, Iowa, and Michigan. According to his coach, Crow ell's favorites include Notre Dame, Virginia, Southern Cal, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, North Carolina and N.C. State, although the lanky youngster was unable to narrow his choices any further at present. Crowell is just one is a line of athletes in the family. His father,. Napoleon Crowell Jr., played foot ball and baseball at Carver while his mother Patricia, ran track at the old Atkins High School. Valerie, 24, played basketball at Gardner- Webb while Ronulus, 21, plays baseball for Central Pied* mont Community College. Two younger brothers, Ange lo, 12 and Juwon, 8, both play for the Vikings in Pop Warner foot ball. Robert Brown, 25, whom Crowell calls a brother as well, played football at North and Albany State. Brown , whose mother is Patricia's sister-in-law, was raised by the Crowells. ? Three uncles played profes sional football as well, with the Bears, Broncos and Browns. "I felt really honored " Crow ell said, when first informed of the selection. His father, who missed most of his son's games last season because of an illness, said he was honored as well, since only the top? players in the country are chosen. His mother, smiling proudly* said, "We didn't realize he was this good. I went to all his games last yekr. Jt's a blessing from God to get these honors and not get hurt,'' she added. The Viking team, which runs for a veer offense, has been ham pered due to an iniuiy*tO"hts~top passing quarterback ? & has still caught over 20 passes for over 400 yards despite getting dou ble and triple coverage by the opposition . Crowell is also the starting right comer back and has 3 interceptions.. ? . I III.. 1 ? 1 Baltimore Lands MEAC? Tournament Through 1 997 c The city of Baltimore and the Mid-Eastem Athlet ic Conference have joined forces to commit the annual ME AC Basketball Tournament to the Baltimore Arena for the next four years. - The announcement was made by Mayor Kurt J. Schmoke and MEAC Commissioner Ken Free in a joint news conference. The MEAC will hold its upcoming 23rd Basket ball Tournament March 10-13, 1994. The event includes both men's and women's championships. The MEAC is an NCAA Division I member com prised of nine historically Black collegiate institutions including: Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Fla.; Coppin State College, Baltimore, Delaware State University, Dover, Del.; Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Fla.; Howard University, Washington, D.C.; University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, Md.; Morgan State University, Baltimore; North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro; and South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, S.C. "This is actually a reunion because "Baltimore hosted MEAC Tournaments in 1974 and 1975," said Commissioner Free. The Conference is looking for ward to many years of success in the city of Baltimore. It is a great city with a great major. On behalf of the MEAC Council of Chief Executive Officers and the entire MEAC family, I promise we will da everything possible to make this venture a success," added Free. "I am extremely pleased that Baltimore has been chosen to host the MEAC Tournament over thee next several years," said Schmoke. ''Baltimore's Morgan State University and Coppin State College are testa ments to the city's great basketball tradition. I want to thank Melvin Bilal, one of our leading local business men, for agreeing to chair the local organizing com mittee and we look forward to a great event" For the past three years the tournament had been held in Norfolk, Va. Besides the MEAC's stay in Balti more, other sites were Durham, (1972-73), Greensboro (1976-79, 1983-84 and 1987-90), Winston-Salem (1980-82), and Philadelphia. (1985-86). The MEAC Men's defending champion is Balti more's Coppin State, which earned the league's auto matic entry into the NCAA 'Men's Division champi onship last March. The women's defending champion is South Carolina State. Tickets for the 1994 MEAC tournament will go on sale Nov. 1 at the Baltimore arena and all nine MEAC member institutions.
