And you can do it too. You just
have to want it real bad.

you can taste it. Dream big
dreams and have a refuse-to-be
denied attitude. And if you do
those things, nothing can stop
you."

Mount Olive Baptist will celebrate church, pastoral anniversaries
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
The Mount Olive Baptist
Church congregation will cel
ebrate the 93rd anniversary of
the church and the 23rd
anniversary of its beloved pas
tor, Rev. Charles E. Gray,
"Son of Thunder." on April 7
at 4 p.m. The theme is "Mov
ing By the Power." The guest
speaker will be Rev. Joseph R.
Samuels from St. Stephen
Missionary Baptist Church.
"Trust in the Lord with all
thine heart; and lean not unto
thine own understanding. In
all thy ways acknowledge Him
and He shall direct thy paths."
This is what a group of Chris
Rev. and Mrs. Gray
tian people did when God led
them to establish Mount Olive
Baptist Church in 1909.
Our first place of worship
was a storefront building on
South Ridge Avenue. We rent
ed the building for several
years and burned the mortgage
in 1921. In 1934. the building
was torn down and a new
building erected.
The construction of 1-40
and U.S. 52 caused us to relo
cate. On Sept. 5, 1954. we
marched from the building on
South Ridge Avenue to our
present location.
Our first pastor was Rev.
McQuater. Following
McQuater were several pas
tors. Under the leadership of
these pastors. God brought
Mount Olive a mighty long
way.
On April 7, 1979. Rev.
Gray was called as our pastor.
Under his leadership and guid
ance, our membership has
grown tremendously. We have
formed a Junior Deacon and
Deaconess Board, a Spiritual
Choir, a Gospel Choir, a Mass
Choir, an evangelism class, a
youth department, a singles
ministry, a dance and step
ministry, and a security min
istry.
Also under Gray's leader
ship. we have renovated our
church four times. In our latest
renovation, we doubled our
seating capacity, enlarged our
fellowship hall, added an
exquisite pastor's study, a
men's restroom. six class
rooms." illuminating lights, a
sound system. 48 pews, a neon
outdoor sign and a 200-car 1
parking lot.
In 1993, we released out
first album. "Let God Be
God." composed by Rev.
Gray, and the dynamic play
also titled "Let God be God."
written by Rev. Gray's son.
Michael Gray, was presented
to the public.
In 1996. we released our
second album. "Magnify
Him." and presented our sec
ond play. "Order My Steps,"
both written and composed by
Rev. Gray.1 In 1997. we pre
sented to the public our play
"The Upper Room to Cal
vary." also written by Rev.
1 Gray.
Our Sunday school and
ushers are strongly represent
ed in district and stale organi
zations. With all the work that
we have done so far. and we
will do in the future, nothing
will ever be more important
than bringing lost souls to
Christ.
The public is invited to|
attend. The church is at 1301 |
E. Belews Street.
