Masons hold Kids' Day SPECIAL I'O THE CHRONICLE If reil tongues; snow-cone splattered T-shirts; smiling faces with painted hearts, ani mals and balloons; and stom achs about to burst with hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and snacks are signs of children having a good time, then 30th District Deputy Grand Master James Tatum and District Deputy Grand Matron Barbara Martin and the brothers and sis ters of the Prince Hall Masonic family achieved their objective for Kids' Day 2002 on Saturday, July 27, at Rupert Bell Recre ation Center. Along with food, drinks, snacks and face painting, the nearly 800 kids received Office Depot bags containing pens, pencils, neck key chains, water bottles, T-shirts, loose-leaf paper. subject notebooks, stuffed animals and other age appropriate items. They were also entertained by various community groups. The 30th District thanks all who participated and attended, and especially the sponsors, including Royal Cake Co.,- Office Depot, Ange lo Brothers, Sara Lee, Wachovia/First Union, US Airways and Piedmont Rent-a-John, who all ' helped make this such a successful event. John Hawkins, idward Russell and James Tatum King Solomon Consistory 64 gets awards for service SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE John Hawkins (33rd degree), Edward Russell (33rd degree) and James Tatum (33rd degree) of King Solomon Consistory 64 were presented with awards for outstanding service. The awards were presented at the Council of Deliberation, held at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Charlotte. Hawkins is die commander in-chief of King Solomon Consis tory 64. He received an award for Best Consistory of the* Year in North Carolina. Hawkins said that only with the support of his peers and princesses was he able to accomplish this goal. Russell received an award for his outstanding service in trans portation. He and his staff were responsible for transporting guests to and from the airport as well around the city. He went above and beyond to make the guests welcome. Tatum was coordinator for the Supreme Council, which was held in Winston-Salem at the Adam's Mark Hotel. He received an award for unselfish and dedicated service. He has earned the respect and admiration of his brothers, peers and princesses. King Solomon Consistory 64 commends these brothers for their hard work and dedication. It is with gratitude and respect that these awards were presented. W-S Foundation awards grant to continue development of habitat SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Winston-Salem Founda tion has awarded $5,700 to Bolton Elementary School for the continued development of the school's nature habitat. An official National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat, Bolton's habitat was begun five years ago. The outdoor class room is home to numerous species of plant and animal life. 'This grant will give us addi tional resources to improve and maintain the entire habitat area," said Analda Howell, a science teacher at Bolton. "We plan to develop nature trails into the wooded area, which allow peo ple to have direct contact with many species of plants native to North Carolina." Some of these plants include running cedar! crane-fly orchid, American holly and magnolia virginiana. The Winston-Salem Founda tion supports charitable pro grams in Greater Forsyth Coun ty. Founded in 1919 with a $1,000 gift from Col. Francis Fries, the foundation now administers more than 800 funds, with total assets of almost $210 million. Money for the Bolton grant was made available from the Anne Hanes Willis Fund.
